The steering effort is not due to rack & pinion -- most car these days have that -- it is because there is no power assist.
Unlike most cars today, all 911s up until 1989 (excluding the C4) had a manual steering rack. Since the 911s have the the engine in the rear, there is very little weight over the front wheels, making a manual rack ideal in my opinion.

Yeah, you are right Sean. Its got some fatty tyres on it too... The guy is dropping it off today, Im going to drive it again before I buy. Im excited about joining the Porsche owners club... this is my first one. They are very unique cars.

Steering is hard because there is no power assist - unlike your Acura, it is all up to you. Other than when parking or maneuvering at slow speeds, you will get to really like the very direct steering feedback the 911 gives you.
