Cool 911SC Purchase

I looked at 1978 911SC with 158K the other day. During the test drive the car drove fine. and overall the car was your typical 78 911. Engine has pressure-feed tensioners, and has not had any internal work done (as far as the current owner knows and receipts show). Power windows moved up and down somewhat slow, sunroof motor made a loud noise, headliner needs replacement. This would be my second 911 (prior 1972T), and I know of all the updates, both for reliability (pop off valve, Tie rods) and for performance that I will have done.

My question is for 911SC owners. The power did not begin until 4000RPM. Is this typical? If so, fine, just wanted to ensure it was not pointing to other problems.

My 72T with MFI had power at 2500RPM. I know the "T"'s was tuned for lower end torque. Is the SC tuned more like the earlier "S" models, everything up top?

for me, the magic starts to happen around 3300RPM and pulls nicely thru 6000 in any gear.

On your inspection, check the door stops for tears in the sheet metal. It was only after I bought my car that I noticed this defect. It became so bad, I ended up with an inside-out dent from the end of the door stop (now freely moving about the cabin) banging into the inside of the door. d'oh!

I agree with Slider, the magic starts at about 3300-3400 RPM, and what fun it is...

My only problem is that I have to share the roads with lessor automobiles...(Just kidding!)

I took a friend of mine who wants to buy a new Audi TT for a blast. I told him that for that kind of $, I'd look for a nice used 911 Turbo and really see what driving is all about.....
