Default Is AAA worth having?

I am thinking about signing up for AAA coverage for my '87 911. It just seems like a lot of things could fail at inopportune times. All my other cars have roadside coverage from the manufacturer (Porsche, BMW, Infiniti). For $49 per year it sounds like a good thing to have. Any thoughts?

I think its a good idea, sometimes you may find they are able to respond quicker than your manufacturers outsourced tow companies. The other day I was riding with a friend when his car broke down and we were able to get us and the car home with my aaa card. I do have the extended coverage, up to a hundred miles I think.

There is now an even more extended coverage available - 200 miles. Very useful if you have a flat on the rear of a 930 (where to put the rear wheel). Best deal going for roadside assist, not to mention hotel discounts and such.

I broke down and had a exhaust fire last week. I called AAA to get the freaking car out of my sight. The tow company was there is less than 30 minutes. Yes, AAA is worth having. I have the plus plan. I am still upset too write about my 964,THE SMOKE, OIL DUMP AND THE WORD "FIRE"!!!!

I was always confused about AAA. I knwo the towing is free, but can you pick where to tow it? How does that work? Can I have it towed to my house, try to fix it and if i cant fix it have it towed again to a Porsche mechanic? Or does it have to be one of their ASE certified shops that usually dont specialize in porsches?

If during business hours you will be towed to the shop of your choice. I own a mercedes and bmw repair shop and if a customer breaks down during non-business hours the customer can be towed home and the towed again the next day. I dont know what the fine print of my aaa plan says but I know my customers do this all the time.

I don't agree - towing insurance thru my ins. co. is only $10! I've had my car towed home or to a shop using that.

You can just call a AAA towing service if you think they are better. I always use a place that has flat beds.

So why pay 5x more?

AAA is also excellent for their maps, travel guides. Just that is worth that. When's the last time a service station handed out free maps?

Another thing good about AAA is that you can join when you're standing next to your immobile vehicle and have them on their way to help you.
I know because I let my membership lapse, then found myself stranded.

It's cheap and it's worth it.

AAA also gets you hotel discounts. I used mine at Porsche Parade last year in Hershey and saved a bundle. It pretty much pays for itself if you use it once.

I have it and a week later I ran out of gas.. so it alread y payed for itself, I have the extended plan and it has 4 service calls per year with 200km. If I want i can have it towed home , and later to a shop . it would just be 2 service calls... but if it were after hours I would imagine it is only one but who cares.
As far as the towing on insurance goes .. no way for me .. I am not giving them ANY reason to say I made a claim and give them reason to jack my rates .. cause god wkows they don't need one.

Well worth having AAA
I upgraded to the 100 mile plan. I only had the 7 mile plan.
My coil went out 7 miles away. Glad AAA had a flatbed to take it home.
You never know.............
