I gues the bottom line is check them periodically, my car gets stored every winter on jackstands, so this is a simple task for me.

ice: You're right, cleanliness is the key. So is using 12.9 bolts (factory if possible) torqued to 60 lb/ft (10mm size), or 31 lb/ft (8mm size). The mating surfaces between the CV joint and flange must be clean and dry. If you use appropriate care they should not come loose. New car pre-delivery inspection or the first 1,000 mile service (when there used to be such a thing) to my knowledge did not call for re-torquing CVs, so there should be no reason to have to re-torque a replacement. FYI, we cleaned the bolts/washers in solvent and dried them prior to installation (this was standard practice for all the hardware used to R&I an engine, or engine & trans). We also cleared the CV bolt holes of crud by pushing a rag through them.

Hmm. This all sounds very differant from the way I put it all back together. And I was talking crap about the last guy that torqued them. Guess I have some more work ahead. No big deal, just more dirty work.

I would consider putting some blue loctite thread locking compound on the bolts. Will keep them from coming out but will still be easy to remove. I've done a few Audi Quattro clutch jobs and the manual says the center driveshaft CV is actually supposed to have red loctite which has to be heated to remove. Little dab of the blue on each bolt should do the trick.

Might be worth a trip to the store to get the blue. Red will work but you have to get it very hot to remove the bolts if you need to.

I have a 78sc , no schnor washers or half moon pieces, but my 87 944 did have them , must be a later design. Ho cap either. Just cv joints, boots and a couple of gaskets, not to mention grease that will multiply and spread forever.

Less than 100 miles after a shop 915 rebuild my driver side inboard CV joint let go at 30 mph. I did a lot of research on CV joint failure another Porsche forum; there's a 'mother of all' CV Joint Failure thread that is an incredible, it's been going on for at least a year. With the information I gained I was able to get to get the shop fess up for one halfshaft. Since I have a '77' ROW Carerra that came from the factory that came with 50mm M8 CV joint bolts, no washers or half moon plates, I was advised to use Schnorr washers with the new bolts torqued to 30-32 ft lbs. I bought 24 washers for $4 and handed them to the shop owner with instructions to install.... feel a lot safer knowing the information gained was handed down by the Porsche gods...no charge.....LOL
Cheers,
AJAKE

My 73 Thing came with 1/2 moon plates and with 240,000 miles never had a CV bolt backing out.

Must be beacuase 60 HP is not putting a beating on the rear axle.

Got the axles back on with new bolts and blue locktight.

The slight clunk I was investing about in the rear is now gone

So guess what happened again! Yeah! I started this thread and once again, the bolts backed out and one broke, just like before. This time, I wasn't even moving yet. I began to move and then it happened.
I have to say that I never cleaned out the holes or used lock tight. I thought I would "get to that later" so I guess I will get to it now. What a dumb azz.

I just pulled the engine and trans on a 914/6 conversion that I'm repairing the broken chassis on, in addition to other things, and on one side 3 of 4 cv bolts were loose. This is 3 weekends of track use and no street driving after a reputable shop installed the engine. I'm going to be sure to clean the hardware and threads very well, and use small drops of blue loctite, and re-torque them after his next trip to the track. And, I think I'll check them on my car now too.

I had the CV bolts let go on my 944 back when. . . Not a pleasant experience. Fortunately I got off light and there wasn't any damage since I was going slowly at the time, but the tow truck driver that showed up told me he'd seen a case where he'd seen them come loose on another car and the half-shaft (spinning rapidly) dug into the pavement slightly ahead of the axle which caused the thing to pole-vault and tear half of the back end of the car off. Not a good situation.

Safety wire those suckers. . . Glad you're okay.
