Apples and oranges. Decide what your intended purpose is: funtime weekender? daily driver? tracking?

While obviously closely-related cousins, they have markedly different personalities, not to mention purchase price. The "better" choice is the choice that suits your needs best. ...which is why I have both

Wow. That's a beauty. I'm sick of seeing you guys get beautiful SCs while I pathetically slog thru the crap dealer ads for my search for the right black SC for nearly two years

Edward,

I envy your collection of 911s!! I'm looking to get started on my own here shortly.
My current planned/intended purpose for my 911 is weekend fun, track/DE/auto-x. I don't forsee it being a daily driver, but probably being driven a lot
I don't want to hijack this thread... I'm guessing that would put me more in the SC-late '80s category. Is that a fair assumption?

Edward is exactly right. I bought an SC as I was looking for a weekend fun car, and I wanted the raw sports car feel. However, if I was getting one as a daily driver I would get a 964 or 993 (or maybe, heaven forbid, a 996??) as they are much easier to drive (hydrolic clutch, power steering, decent A/C, etc). Heck, if I had one as a daily driver I might have to get a (GASP) tiptronic.

Having just sold a 964 and now having the SC I would have to agree that for a daily driver I would look to the 964 or 993 series. I also would not turn up my nose at a 996 for that purpose. The later cars are just a bit more civilized and comfortable for daily use. My 911s have been weekend and track toys to moving backwards to the SC was a simple decision for me. I eventually would like to trade my Jag S-Type for a 996 or 997 Cab for daily use, but I have to wait for the kids to get a bit older.

That seems to be the consensus here, and I am leaning that way myself based off advice given here.

Default Jumping on board this thread

I am a rebounder too.

I sold my 2000 996 and went back to a 1988 Targa. My son and I couldn't wipe the smiles off our faces when I drove the Targa - something that never happened in the 996. This 88 has just over 12K miles and is like new.

Default Beautiful Targa!

I also have an 88 Targa (nutmeg brown paint/ chestnut leather interior) with 54k miles. I traded down from my 99 996 C2 (after lease expire) to the 88 Targa. Like you, I find the everyday 20-60 mph driving much more fun than the 996. The 996 was superior at 90 mph plus....but that was a very small percentage of my driving opportunity.

All these posts have me convinced I'm going to focus my 911 hunting on an immaculate SC/Carrera. And in 10 years I'll add a 997 to the collection

Measured to the fender lip, straight from the ground through the center of the wheel - 24.25" rear, 24.75" front. Note that the car is parked in my garage and the floor is naturally pitched to the rear. I am not sure if that changes the way the car is sitting by a measurable amount or not. The car does seem to have a slight rake from rear to front.

Great cars, all of them. Beauties, but stick to air cooled, it is more porsche.
