there are so many old 1980's SL in great conditon and for cheap, but they are just not loved like the 911.
Pass on the 560SL, even at 15k your friend will have a hard time finding a buyer... nobody pays for them...
911 is the one you want.

I too love the older Benzs'. Problem is, the Benz is an automatic only correct? I'd do the P car if nothing more than the manual transmission factor.
Yes, fun thread.

I just started to look for a 560sl, found one, agreed on a price then the next day I got a text from the seller that he was not going to sell. So back to watching criags list. Need a automatic roadster with good AC and heat that is cool and inexpensive. My wife says we need a slow car so we can see the scenery.

hah! I was totally reading this with confusion as the thread starts by saying that $22k for an 80k mile Carrera is too much to pay. then I saw that it's a 13 year old thread.
You looking for an SL or a fun car (911)? I'm in MN and may know of a couple. Porsches that is.

I KNOW this is not a 560, but pretty. They do have a 560, but not as good condition as the 380.

Have a few bases covered, we have a E-type coupe, 911 carrera cab, .2 gt3 and a scud. Looking for the 560sl to complement the mix. I think it has timeless style and is much more affordable than other choices.

Correct..... I looked at the three threads like the ones on top of where i am writing this & there it was.
I thought it was interesting. I didn't go search for it. It was rite there.
I do have a glut of them. I can advertise them here for free..... Do you see any of my ads here? NO!
If you look there now there is another thread about 1989 560sl's

Thanks, guys, for helping me over my dark hour of doubt!
Of course I knew the answer to my question, but it's still good to hear it from others. I'd probably not forgive myself if I passed on the chance of owning and driving a Porsche.
I agree that $22,000 is on the high end of the spectrum, but I have to do the deal long distance and thus have to find a car where the owner is forthcoming in providing service documents, where I could speak at length to the mechanic who has serviced the car for years and who works for a nationally know Porsche dealership, where the owner is a PCA member (not that they are all angels, but still gives you some coordinates)-- in short where I could be reasonably sure this is a solid and reliable car. If all goes well I'm going to pick it up next week and drive it back to Chicago--wish me luck!
After three or for PPI's where the inspecting mechanic would say things like "we cannot exclude that this '90 C2 has a cylinder-head leak, and we cannot determine whether the clutch has been updated" I decided to stay away from 964s although I really like their looks and know that they are not all problematic. Maybe in a few years I'll trade up.
I hope soon my posts will be less philosophical and more like "what's that **** on the center console for?" or "is cruising at 140 mph bad for the motor?"

Good decision. Price on that 911 is high ... but you'll forget about it after your first spirited-driving road trip! Don't forget to wear "depends" if you will drive it like a Porsche 911 is supposed to be driven. I own two Mercedes and a 911 C4S. Guess which one I yearn to sneak off in!
Buy the 911 and then enjoy each and every mile [with or without the wife]!
