Default light steering/high speeds

Howdy from Wyoming!

Spring is here and my new (to me) 1971 911T is out of the garage and running. The new PMOs are really sweet. Long stretches of rural highway have me noticing that the steering gets pretty light cruising above 90. At 110 to 120 it was really noticable, especially in crosswinds. Would a period correct 911S spoiler help to correct this? Other than that, the car ran perfectly and my brother and I covered a little over 80 miles in an hour or so. Thanks for your input.

Hi Winslow:

Welcome to the "World of early 911 Aerodynamics",...

Indeed, they DO get light at those speeds due to gross front lift and the distance between the centers of gravity and aerodynamic pressures. The key is to install the later style front spoiler/bumper as used on the '72-'73 cars. Those help a great deal.

If you can get the book "911 Story" by Paul Frere, he describes the problem and how Porsche ran wind tunnel testing to improve the aerodynamics, resulting in the chin and rear spoilers on later cars.

Don't worry, in true Porsche tradition it was the best way to add power steering without a heavy pump ..

if you add the front chin spoiler add the ducktail to balance refer to paul frere's book . adding both makes a HUGE difference.
