Default Alternator problem, Part 15...

Just installed my freshly rebuilt alternator (from a reputable shop) on my 1982 SC, and it still isn't working. Upon start-up I took the revs to 2K and received a reading of across the battery terminals of 12.02; left car running for 15 minutes and sure enough the reading across the terminals was down to 11.88.

The battery is less than a year old and was fully charged. What gives???????

DE season is coming!!!!!!! Arghhhhhhhhh.....

Suggestions please.....

when you turn the key on, does the battery light, light up? If not, the circuit is not complete, and the battery will not charge.

I would ask them if they bench tested it before returning it to you, if they did you must have it hooked up incorectly. Just an fYI I did EXACTLY as you have just done yesterday. Put in my rebuilt alternator and got 11.8 volts on runing with the alternator on. The one thing I was concerned about was one of the connect ors was just a push on connector ( for the brushes ) ( I have an external regulator ) . When I took off the shroud again there was the wire hanging. With all the twisting to put that F-ing shroud back on the wire had simply come off. I put it back on much more carefuly and all is good.

I feel your pain ... I just did it yesterday and the back of my hands are pretty cut up. But think yourself lucky. I think your car has three nuts holding on the shroud, mine has all six. Do you have a bently for the connections ? I can help if you don't . I think all your wires are screwed on but if not try just loosening the shround and peering in . I got lucky with mine ... Don't be too upset .. if they bench tested it and it works I would in=magine it is something fairly simple .. but if the car is a daily driver .. what a pain ...

Well yours is a later car so the regulator is built in . The only other thing I could think of would be broken or frayed wires.. according to the bently there is only 3 wires . B+ to the battery.,D+ to the warning light and D- to the electrical . But my bently does show to push on wires coming from the regulator in the photograph. If that is the case I would be checking them first ...

PS I was so annoyed late night I decided to dive right in . Whipped the belt off, took the two 10mm bolts off , took the two 13mm nuts off of the coil, loosened the strap , undid the 6, 8mm nuts .. 15mins and I had it out enough to check ... I have this thing out WAY too often ..
