air con & whale tail
hello everyone
I am looking at a 1989 3.2 which is for sale with a whale tail fitted from new, and with air con.
On asking the local Porsche Centre about removing the whale tail the service manager said he would not recommend it because the aircon radiator/condenser (I'm not sure of the term) is integrated with the tail. He said he did not know how things could be re-arranged to allow the fitting of a standard engine lid with the air con still working.
However I'm pretty sure I have seen photos of 3.2s with the standard engine lid and aircon fitted.
I am sorry to say that I do not like the whale tail look - I am sorry because I don't want to offend those that do like it, and, believe me, if it cannot be removed without losing the air con, then it will be staying in place and I will get to like it !
any experiences/advice out there?

I did the same thing with my car ('82 SC). I bought a stock decklid, painted and re-installed the a/c condensor. Of course, now the a/c is completely out of my car anyway...
It's an easy project.
EDIT: Keep in mind after removing the whale tail, your two decklid shocks could over-power your lighter decklid. I kinda like it when mine flies open though...

I am sure guys will want to buy your tail too ( hmmm that didn't come out right ! ) , maybe tell the guys here first , is it a carrera tail or a turbo tail ?

You need to find another Porsche Centre or mechanic.

That is good for you if you don't like it, because you can sell it for couple hundred bucks
Removing the tail won't do any physical thing to the condenser. Only that you have to do some bondo to cover the bolt wholes, or buy another used lid.

Yes, it is a standard Carrera tail.
Dave, would it be possible for you to post/email some photos of the condenser attached under the regular engine lid? I'd be very grateful.
Does anyone have any suggestions on vendors where I can obtain the regular engine decklid?

I wasn't going to resort to mentioning that your guy is either not 911-wise or he is trying to 'earn' some extra coin, but it appears others have done so already, so why not blindly join the herd?
At least find someone that has had the rear lid of a 911 opened before to service your car. You will be glad you did, probably sooner than later.

Does anyone's stock a/c system actually work?
I got so frustrated with the system that I ditched the whole thing and replaced it with a Kuehl system from Griffiths.
Katalog - here's some more pics.
The first pic is of the decklid on my 82 SC with condenser. Which
The second pic is of the condenser and the ugly stock York compressor, which I swear generated more hot than cool, with decklid removed.
The third pic my new engine compartment with no condenser (since they're now in my LH rear fender).

That is a great looking motor and installation. Please tell us how you like/dislike the Kuehl system once you get it on the road.
