Post 915 - G50 gearbox in a 1982 3.0L SC

I have an 82 SC Sport with a 915 gearbox. I'm havin a bit of a problem selecting 2nd gear (grinding on both up and down shift), unless I double-de-clutch. I was thinking that if there is a need to strip the box down to fix it, then I might consider the option of installing a G50 box instead. I've heard that they can be fitted but there is a need to have part of the caseing cut down and a different flywheel/clutch installed.
Has anyone done this or have any info on the conversion?
I use the car on track mostly and occasional road use.
Any advice greatfully recieved.
Cheers
Tom

It's not a straightforward conversion. You have to get a shortened G50, and switch the pedals and install lines for the hydraulic clutch. Count on it being at least $5k.

I am in the process of putting a G50 in an SC. I had the tranny machined but I found that I had to move the motor back 3/4" in the car also. So if I did the conversion again I would look into coilovers instead of shortening the tranny. It is a fair amount of work to do the conversion. Moving the motor has been a bunch of work.

Probably better to stick with the 915 then and just sort the problem out with a rebuild.

if you have a few extra dollars to burn, check into swapping ratios on 2nd through 5th. Supposed to be a huge difference.

Yeah
I had planned to do something with the ratios in the future. Not too sure yet which way to go, though a top speed of 130mph would probably be good for most tracks in the UK.
