The combination of a gutted cat and a new Dansk single inlet/single outlet sport exhaust have transformed the car. It's louder, but not obnoxious, just 'sounds like it should'. I don't detect any wierd resonance due to having an empty cat instead of a straight pipe or cat-bypass. Of course it's nothing like my 996 was with no mufflers and Fabspeed pipes from the cats straight out the back, but this combo passes the 'visual OEM components inspection' and the car feels much stronger, better throttle response and better pull at lower revs. Mechanic said this SC feels as strong as any SCs he's ever driven, considering it's totally stock except for the empty cat and new exhaust. Ready for an autoX next weekend!
wake co guys, i'm in cary.....i'm also wondering where to go to get work done, probably european performance over on hillsborough. i thought that guy's name was jimmy? they've been there 20 years (across the street before the new bldg), so they should be reliable right?
i had a project up on purnell rd, there are definitely some good roads up that way
Jimmy at European is good, I've been pleased so far. Just try to get Jimmy himself to work on the car, or talk to whoever else works on the P-cars. They work on most German marques but I'm not sure who's trained on what. The fellow that put on my Dansk this morning was good, knowledgeable about the cars but I didn't catch his name.
Also, Chuck Miller at Millersport in Hillsborough, has a great reputation, I've just not been over there.
Another great guy I have experience with is Gary up at Leith Euro Imports on Capital, he was at Leith Porsche but moved up to Capital Blvd since he lives way north of Raleigh. He cut his teeth on air-cooled P-cars and is very good. He's looking to get more Porsches there, so it depends on who's most convenient to you.
I'll second the vote for Gary at Leith Euro on capital. He's a good guy. I had him work on my Boxster, and plan to send him my 911 work too.
joey c, greenjt and GothingNC: I live around Creedmoor and 540. I'm pretty new to the 911 world, and I'd love to learn how to do some of the work myself, including valve adjustment. If you guys ever get together for some project work, I'd love to join. I can be official beer-getter and question-asker.
Jimmy was there today. The private collector is a former CEO of Glaxo Smith Klein, I've seen some of his cars at EP. More at http://www.ingramcollection.com/
I'll second that 'invite myself to tech session'. I missed the local PCA region visit to Leith for a tech session on a Cayman.
I'm inviting myself to my own tech session this weekend for a little brake work. My front discs are below spec so I'll be installing 2 new Zimmerman drilled rotors. I also hope to get to changing out some of my soft brake lines to braided/stainless. If anybody wants to come by to be head wrench getter or assistant question asker (behind me) let me know.
EDIT: as for that valve check/adjustment, you're about 4 weeks late, though i'd be happy to help somebody a bit with theirs if they are due.
For Wake Cty,eastern NC - there's a 'helmet party' Saturday 3/18 from 10AM to 2PM at Krause & England http://www.krauseandengland.com/ put on by Hurricane PCA region and CV Products http://www.cvproducts.com/cv/ . CV sells Bell, Simpson and Sparco. I've already bought my SA05 Bell but this is a good opportunity to try on different brands and styles. I'm going to take my helmet that Dave Blum at K&E helped me design, maybe he can get some more customers.
I'd love to visit and help with the brakes but I have prior work and Sebring-watching engagements.
Please let us know how the stainless lines install. (another of my to-do's)
Ahhh, the ingram collection. Quite a sight to behold. His 959 is freakin' amazing!
greenjt, thanks for the offer - but my driver's seat is out of the car (I'm 80% done recovering it) so I need to spend all of my (precious little) free time getting that project finished. I do need to do a valve adj. sometime soon (I don't have a record of the previous owner EVER doing one) and I have 101 projects as a guide, but someone who has done it before would be a big help. Leith Euro wanted $400 to do it, so I figure I'll try it myself first.
Just got the word today that (either my N.C. county, or N.C.-wide) 2006 inspections do not require sniff tests for cars older than (forgot the year), ...
I don't know the cutoff date either, but in January my 87 did not require an emissions test.
On an unrelated note, last weekend I met some people at Peak Automotive in Apex. From what I saw inside they are a pretty good restoration shop, and the shop manager, Talin, told me that they were looking for a good P-car mechanic so they can set themselves up as a Porsche restoration and performance shop. It will be interesting to see what kind of talent they can get.
