Mid-engined (close to neutral) handling, with the added 996 motor, could be entirely awesome.
I know this is old, but its true today in 2020--Miata is not always the answer--986 Boxster is.

Wow, serious thread necro here... A lot has changed in the 18 years since this thread started. I'd say at this point a stock 911 SC or carrera 3.2 is a TERRIBLE idea for a car to get into DEs with... and I say that as someone who's track car at the moment is a torsion bar 911. The cars that track day bros are driving in 2020 are so fast that my 3.6 swapped 911G is a moving chicane on the straights in the advanced groups. You definitely have to be able to use your mirrors to drive a classic 911 in the faster groups today. If I was getting started tracking now, I would probably want a Cayman at a minimum and hope to grow into it. Other good options would be C6 or C7 corvettes or newer camaros.

I started DE last year in a 911 SC. Random data point to an old thread.

Nice thread recovery. First track session was a 72 911 in the 90s. First POC time trial was a 69. Then raced an 83 SC. Then moved to open-wheels.

I’d still vintage race any of them. Not so fast lap times relative to more modern cars, but as much fun...if not more.

Oh boy ... does Auto Werks ever have a valid point !

I did PCA DE's with my 89 911 for 8-9 years and finally realized that a 3.2 vintage car has no place in the black run group. In the meanwhile i spent tons of $$$ installing
suspension parts, brake upgrades and eventually i installed a 95 3.6 with close to 300HP and i still needed a mechanical arm to point by all the GT3's, Caymans and other 385+ hp cars
that were running with me.
It is a great car to learn track awareness and driving lines with an instructor in a green or white run group but anything solo is kind of disappointing as you would be causing a train
for the faster cars and not all drivers are qualified to drive faster cars around slower vehicles.

I finally gave up DE's and bought a 944 SP2 car to race , although at some of the PCA enduros , we were matched up with Cup cars and GTB1 Caymans ... that is
quite an adventure when you have cars that are 15-20 seconds faster per lap for 90 minutes ...
A nicely sorted Boxster or Cayman would be the ideal DE car , if i ever go back to DE's one day , it will be in a Cayman !

Cheers
Phil

Seriously, an 18 year old thread? I vintage race a '67 911. But in any other context I'd just be a dangerous rolling chicane.
