Default What is this car worth? 1980 SC Targa Salvage

1980 Targa SC with Whale Tail
168,000 Miles, Salvage title, California Car
-was hit on right rear and repaired by PO (not current owner)--repaired correctly, frame straight--I couldn't tell from looking at that side
-Guards red-paint still shines, few scratches, and some chips in engine lid,
since owner traded his ducktail for a whale tail and it was a bad trade--the
engine lid for the whale tale has some dents and paint chips
-Stainless steel aftermarket exhaust and still passes Smog
-Chocolate (Dark) Brown interior. Has dash cover to cover up dash crack.
-No rips in seat leather--one seat not sitting right-has missing bolt that
owner willl put back--he was trying to install racing seats but he backed
out and didn't quite make everything back to normal (he will)
-Interior otherwise clean, back seats fine, no rips in seat leather
-Shifter very hard to put in 1st and it pops out-so need to start from a stop
sign using 2nd gear
-I shifted kind of rough during the test drive- got a burning smell
-another burning smell owner says that what a heater going on smells like
-Lots of DIY stuff done on the car by an enthusiast
-When he bought it a few year ago did leakdown--good results
-When he bought it at the time of the crash the mechanic went and replaced
all seals- does not leak oil whatsoever.
-Car is not being advertised because owner may keep it and put on slantnose &Y widebody kit
-He has had offers from 6.5-8k but diidn't take them, in nor hurry to sell
-He told me 6k but a firm 6k, no bargaining down from there.

Here are links to bigger pictures than below (and a few more)

-Without the salvage title this car is worth probably 10-12k right?
How much does the salvage or other issues reduce this car's value?

thanks in advance.

Forgot to mention--the rubber above the seals on the small window right behind the side mirrors needs replacing there is a gap/whole there that you can see--he said that piece is about $25 a side--the targa roof itself was repaired and doesn't have leaks..

Honestly, umfan866. my first thought when I read your description is:

Which is going to be faster: The car or the money streaming out of your wallet?

The salvage title will never go away. You can throw 20K at it & it would still be a 8 - 9K car. With all of the rest - lid, dash cap, smells etc etc . . . If there are no leaks, why is there a rag underneath it & why does the heater smell? And why did he turn down previous higher offers?

Walk away & let him 'put on slantnose & widebody kit'

Just my opinion . . .

If this car is "leakfree" I'd be really surprised...the right heater has an oil stain that does not look very old...on the other hand...would be great if you could save this poor car from a slantnose/widebody kit! Act with caution...as far as the oil leaks...take it for another test drive...park the car and leave a cardboard underneath...wait 15 minutes and check!Good luck...

On top of everthing else that gearbox could cost you a small fortune to fix, imo you are NOT getting a deal by the time you fixed everything you could have bought yourself a decent NON salvaged car.

I understand $6K could be tempting... not a lot to own a 911... but I agree with the others. That poor car looks like a mess. The huge turbo tail is not becoming on an SC and the deck lid is ruined, the targa top looks bad, 1st gear synchro (at least) is bad, etc, etc.... Be patient and a better looking SC for sub-$10K will come along...

honestly, if you plan to keep the car for a long time, salvage/mileage doesn't matter. The matter is the condition of the car. Condition of the car you show doesn't look that attractive. Also, there is no pics of the engine.
One of the 85 I looked last year look a little worse than that but minor problem only such as windshield crack, no heater hose, etc.. clean title. Asked $10k. I let it go because think thinking about all the time you have to spend on it, also parts are expensive.
I won't pay $10k for this car.

Followup:

The guy called me up today to follow up and said someone is coming with cash to see the car.
I told him do what you have to do. If you don't hear from me, go ahead and sell the car.

BTW It was still much better than the other car I was considering this weekend, but not
enough to jump on it (here's the other car I was considering) owner wants 5k good luck!!!

You've got good advice here. Save the emotional stuff after you've bought a car you can drive!
I just paid $8,500 for a sweetheart w/upgrades that needs maybe $2,000 in brakes, tuneup, suspension and tires...driving it every day...

Dont buy a car you cant afford to keep. It isn't fair for EITHER of you.

I deal with it everday with BMW's that are out of warranty but still cost $20K to buy and people finance them for 4-5 years so they can drive a BMW. Then they start to need stuff here and there, just niggling little stuff that HAS to be fixed, the owners don't have the money, then the little things keep adding up untill they are driving around a poorly maintained **** box BMW that needs $3K worth of work they still have payments on
