I have the strangest electrical problem with my seatbelt warning light on my 86 911. Every 15 minutes or so my seatbelt warning light will come on (yes I have my seatbelt on
). What is really strange is once the light comes on, my headlights and dash lights brighten up and then they gradually dim. This will cycle several times in one trip.
This is one for the bizarro file.
Any idea?

Hello Sir,
Your voltage regulator has gone bad. You should replace your alternator-regulator unit as soon as possible (you could probaby just replace the regulator, but if you're going to pull the alternator anyway I'd just replace it). You can get a good rebuit unit from Vertex Auto for around $200. Good luck.

Hello. I agree with Fassi I. The sooner the better! You could boil your battery over or worse yet fry fry wiring, lamps, gauges, etc. I learned the hard way.

Thanks for the advice guys, I thought the same thing but when I check the charging voltage at the battery it was 14.2 volts without a load and 13.7 with a load. That is within the specs that I found so I had ruled out the regulator.
What do you think?

It's really a straight-forward job. The most important thing to do before you start is disconnect your negative battery lead, unless you like fireworks! My '81 SC was apparently stored during the winter by previous owner(s) evidenced by the nice little rodent's nest on top of #6 cylinder. This is a good time to paint your fan/housing and search for debris that can restrict airflow over your heads/cylinders/engine mounted oil-cooler. Wayne Dempsey's 101 Projects book is worth it's weight in gold if you like to tackle little jobs like this; as tasks are clearly described and illustrated. Brian Howe '86 944 '81 SC Targa '99 ZX-6R Ninja '99 Eclipse GS-T '91 Capri Turbo
