Post idle problem on 2.7 liter

I can't get my engine to idle without some pressure on the gas pedal. When depressing the gas pedal, the engine initially hesitates, then increases rpm smoothly.

The car is setup as follows:

Weber 40 IDA 3C w/55 idle jets, 135 main jets, 185 air correction jets, F3 emulsion tubes, and 34 venturis
E cams, Euro 8.5:1 p/c's
New points (.011" gap)
New cap/rotor
MSD 6AL ignition w/Blaster 2 coil
New 8.5mm Magnecor wires
New spark plugs (.050" gap)
Bosch distributor

While having an assistant hold the gas pedal to "idle" the car at 1000 RPM, I've tried rotating the distributor from 5 ATDC through TDC to 5 BTDC and can not get the car to idle without pedal pressure. Also, with the pedal depressed to hold 1000 rpm, I can not adjust the 2 idle screws in far enough to contact the stops by the drop-links. I have the vacuum pot on the distributor plugged. Also, there seems to be no difference whether I have the ground wire connected to the distributor or not (should it be??)

Not sure what to try next. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Sounds like you need to adjust the mixture screws. A good starting point is to turn the screws in carefully until you feel them seat then back them out 2 1/2- 3 turns, make sure to back all the screws out the same amount, then follow the standard adjustment procedure.
Also make sure you have the "O" rings at each idle jet holder.

Next, I believe for your setup the proper main jet would be 125, venturi's 30mm, air correction 185, idle 55.
In the past I have found that 5-10 degrees advance at idle gave me the best results, even though it is not consistent with any manual. If you need help you can e-mail or call me at 310-325-4431.

Good luck !

I do not have any O-rings on my idle jets--could this be letting too much air in?

There should be "o" rings at the idle jet holders and also at the base of the mixture screws otherwise you will have small vacuum leaks, especially at idle.
