911 - 996
What is the difference between a 911 and a 996. I was under the impression that the 2002 911 Carrera was a 996. Who can help me with the differentiation? I just purchased a 02 Carrera Cab 2.

DaveyW,
All of the 911s, SCs, Carreras, 964s, 993s, 996s & 997s are more commonly known as a 911. However, each one has its own model line number, as well, and that's where the 964, 993, 996 & 997 come from. Here's a quick breakdown of the model years:
1965-1977: 911
1978-1983: 911SC
1984-1989: Carrera
1990-1994: 964
1995-1998: 993
1999-2004: 996
2005: 997
Another example is the Boxster. It's officially called a "Boxster," but the model name is also referred to as a 986 ('99-'04) & a 987 (present).
