I would take the weekend to strip the door panel and perform a myriad of work, including degreasing the regulator (the "X" that raises and lowers the glass) and regreasing it. While you are in there:
= Reach in and grease the door "tongue." Reach in, move the door, and feel the piece: typically it is impossible to grease this well from the outside, without the panel off. (Bonus points for installing the door reinforcement kit!)
= Note any corrosion on inside/bottom of door. Brush and vaccum bottom of door and apply light coat of engine oil.
= Is the door latch mechanism on your '79 wiggling on the door? Now is the time to put a crosshead screwdriver to the outside and a socket on the other side and tighten the bejabbers out of all three screws. Loctite is useful here. Typically the "captive" nuts on the inside start spinning free. If your mech. is loose this task will firm it up nicely.
= Speakers? Replace them now? Don't forget to reset the plastic half-bowler that protects the speaker from moisture.
= Reposition the window. Do you own a Targa? Now is the time to reset the window angle and front vent height for optimum sealing to the Targa side seal.
= Check your power window supply and note any corrosion. Clean and cover with protective grease.
Gather everything you need and do all of this once, while the door panel is off. You will be AMAZED how well the window will move up and down once you remove the troublesome old grease.
