adjust fan belt, v belt question.
I just bought this 1988, thre are so manythings I have to do (I can see). One of the thing I don't know how yet, is the v belt.
Reading the manual, it said I need to losen the bolt to put some more spacer in there and etc... First thing I need the speacial tool to keep the fan from turning and that tool doen't come with my car. Anyone know a trick to hold this fan without this Porsche special tool?
Is this big bolt direction normal or oposit (tighten = clockwise or counter clockwise)?
Thanks.

Since I'm a newbie myself....I have purchased the 911 Service Manual (Bentley Publishing). In addition, I would recommend you buy 101 Projects for your 911 by Wayne Dempsey, also pick up a copy of the Used 911 Story (Peter Zimmerman)....Maybe a Haynes Manual. You can purchase the fan belt pulley wrench at Pelican Parts. I would buy the tool....its only $37-, and you'll have a good tool for the life of the car. You might be able to find a toolkit on ebay, but they are rare...and usually they are over priced.

Hi rnln,
Welcome aboard!
Most definitely get a Bentley manual when you get the chance. As for the fan belts, if you're into bicycles, a "bottom bracket" tool will keep the pulley from turning while you loosen the bolt (which is threaded normally). Or any wrench that is curved with a "hook" to prevent the pulley from rotating. And make sure that you have all the spacers installed (6 of them, IIRC) ...all you are doing when you adjust belt tension is moving the spacers from "behind" the pulley to "in front of" (or "outside") the pulley.

No toolkit with the car? That's where it would be.
If not, the tool is available from all the major part resellers for less than $40. When I needed the tool I tried to find a used one, but they seemed to sell for $25-$30, so I just bought new. You could debate the need for the full toolkit, some really like the spark plug tool, but for me the fan belt tool is the only one I use from the factory toolkit.
Considering you should not drive the car any distance without the belt (no cooling to the engine) this is a tool you should buy right away. There are 6 shims total and you need to use them all, all the time. If you put all the shims between the pulley halves, that is the loosest setting. The tightest would be with no shims between the pulley and all 6 between the nut and the outer pulley.
If you leave any shims off the pulley won't tighten all the way. The pulley could then wobble, chew up the fan then throw the belt.
I'll third the recommendations for the books above.

Thanks all.
Thanks all for valuable response.
Another question, just in case.
I ahve not have a chacne to get to it yet but thinking of doing it tomorrow or thursday. If in case I use all 6 spacers, or if the spacers are not there (I bought the car used and this is my first Porsche). If this case happen, is there a way around? Or do I have to have those spacers?
Thanks.

When you remove the outer pulley nut count the washers(spacers) that come off with the outer pulley half. These are very thin washer looking spacers. They will be there unless previous owner did something strange and removed any of them. If you count 4, then there will be two inside the pulley race. If you need to tighten the belt remove one from the inside and set it on the outside where the retaining nut goes. One does a lot. If your belt is to tight then add one to the middle. All you are basically doing is widen the gap in the pulley. There will be no need to remove the entire pulley assemble just the outside half. It will be a little tougher to get the belt lined up without rotating the the belt. So, make a note to tighten down the nut alittle and turn the Alt. to seat the belt. Then tighten the nut to torque. Crank car and check for tension play.

I searched Pelican Parts and found the spacers listed at $.75 each P/N 930-106-564-00-M100. Or you can see if someone has a few to donate to you. If you have a Porsche dealer close by, they may also have them.

Thanks so much guys, much much.
After reading nineoneone response, I feel like I have to remove the belt, and fan to do this?? I thought the fan doesn't have to be removed when I read the owner manual.
Thanks guys.
