CANNOT DECIDEON CAR....
Need Help!!
Cannot Decide which car is the better deal however I really like the 1987 guards red car:
87 911 for $16500 98,000 miles
90 911 for $16500 110000 miles
Both cars look good,, Pending a PPI on the 1987
What car is better if both are sound and pass the PPI?
Thanks
Bob

Bob,
I would go with the 87. It is one of the best 911's ever built. They are a fun car, very reliable and have the G50 transmission. I personally feel it will hold it value much better. Plus I own one.

You need to read up a lot on the 964 board. Early 964s had teething problems with the gasket-less heads leaking oil, Dual mass flywheels, and several other things. $16,500 is really really cheap for a 964, so I would think that car may have issues. It may not, but of course you know to do a PPI regardless. It really comes down to opinion I would think.
The 964 is a more comfortable car, more modern, much better A/C system, and different, softer looks.
The 3.2 is a raw, raw car, less refined, more classic, crap A/C, but has the really really classic 911 "look". I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Again, I suggest cross-posting to the 964 board as well as searching the archives of the 964 board for "known issues" or "problems with 964" and do the same with the 911 board.
Happy hunting, and let us know what you decide on.

Take the engine from the 964 and the suspension from the '87 and put them on a '72 - that will give you a car is really raw...
The rawness comment above is a matter of perspective. The '87 is heavy & cushy to me and others. You will just have to read and drive, drive, drive them both to see what you want...

Ok
The 994 has had new seals, new clutch new flywheel,, body checks out. The owner has the receipts,, I am having a PPI performed Friday to validate and check on other issues.
The 994 is a cushier car for sure and is in fantastic shape.
So what is wrong with this car,, is the price really that low? What may be lurking under that beautiful body?
The Airbag light is on and the mechanic is waiting for the part , either the ring behind the steering wheel or the Control box. This could be $800.00?
For a daily driver I would think the 994 would be better. It is the color I like and drives very nice. The tires seem to make a lot of noise, could be bearings but the pitch during cornering did not change ,, could this be just bad tires.
I appreciate any input and will check the other forum for this specific car as recommended
Thanks

Bob:
If the 964 (not 994) has a resealed motor with the update done to the cylinder/head areas, a recent LUK flywheel update and the PPI on it shows a good car, it's really going to be up to you which car you prefer (assuming the '87 is nice as well). All the major issues that can happen on early 964's have been addressed on this example, so it could be a super deal. Higher mileage 964's seem to be selling in the upper teen's area.
These cars drive very different. Yes, the 964 is more refined, but has tangible increases in power. You'll have to decide on what you like best and which 911 fits what YOU want out of 911.
Good Luck,
Jay

Bob--if you are using the car as a daily driver, the 964 will be easier to live with day in/day out than a 3.2 [I used my 993, a very similar car, as a daily driver for over a year].
Good luck and let us know how the PPI goes.

I use my '86 as a daily driver and love it. Most of my drive to and from work is on the freeway and of course does not require a lot of shifting (mine has the 915 tranny). As the others have stated, it appears all the 964 issues have been addressed and the choice will be the car you prefer. I guess the other thing is do you like to work on your car yourself? If so, I think you will find the '87 easier to work on (JMHO).
Good luck!

The '87 is the last generation of the Carrera series of 911, very highly-regarded. The '90 is the first year of a new generation that had many teething problems. My general preference is for the last production run rather than the first.
That being said, I have an '89 and the air conditioning sucks. Could be important depending on where you live. I'm replacing my components and hoses with today's technology. Even then, it's a poorly designed system -- the AC is strictly recirculate, no fresh air enters through the large center dash vent. They did upgrade the AC to a more modern implementation in the 964.
In either case you're talking about old cars so condition, condition, condition of the individual example applies. With all of the updates you mentioned, perhaps the typical 964 first-year woes have been addressed. There is plenty that can be wrong with an '87 too, so back to condition. Check them both out well. They should drive differently too, the 964 is the first non-torsion bar suspended 911. Drive both and see what you like. I'm not sure if the 964 had power steering, I think it did. Without it my '89 drives nicely but certainly isn't flingable in the tight corners. Power steering is a plus IMO.
Looks are quite different too, but that's up to you.
Good luck!
