Default Water in Rear Floors

I have been getting water in the rear floors of my 83 SC Coupe during heavy rains when the car is parked - enough to soak the carpets and puddle on the floorboards. I have not had the chance to dig into it much yet, but don't see signs of water coming in from above (windows, sunroof, etc.), as nothing above the floor is wet or water stained. The door seals look good, as do the rear side window seals. The sunroof seal was replaced recently by the PO. However, the rear window seal is slightly dry and cracked from age. Is is possible for water to travel from the rear window to the flooboards without getting anything in between visibly wet? What are some other obvious places to look for water ingress? If my windsheild is leaking, could water travel behind the dash and migrate the rear floors (lowest point)? Thanks much for any help.

I can almost guarantee it to be the rear window seal. The water runs behind the rear package tray/deck and along the firewall until it reaches the floor.
If you are still suspicious of another location, then put some tape along the sides and bottom of the rear window seal to divert water over the gasket.
Then drench the rear window with a hose and check the floors. I'll bet it will be dry.

Thanks Dan. Makes sense, and will give the tape test a try.

Brian,

Yup, it's the rear window seal as you described what my SC does, except the puddle is just on the pass-side in my case. I also suggest that you remove the rear shelf and as much carpeting as you could and let it dry out really well. Otherwise, all that sound-deadening wool will mold and smell really bad. BTW, look at the archives on the "fix" for a rear window leak ...not a good prognosis short of replacing the seal. Good luck to you.

I have an 88 Coupe. Same problem with the
rear floor pans. Rear window seals for sure.

My temporary solution was/an still is, not to
leave outside, not to drive in the rain an wash
with care. No leak problems since purchase
in Jan. of 02.

Speaking of leaks>I'm the third owner. 106,000
on the clock when purchased.....Now has 114,000.
And no engine leaks! Amazing!!!!

Yep, I have the same problem... My temporary fix, aside from keeping it out of the rain, was to remove the rear floorboard carpets and drill one #10 hole in the lowest part of the pan behind the front seats on each side of car. At least the water would drain out as fast as it came in... lol. Oh, yes when the sun comes out, don't forget to leave the windows cracked so the car can air-dry...

Speaking of leaks>I'm also a third owner. 111,000
on the clock when purchased.....Now has over 198,000.
And still runnin' strong! Even more amazing!!!!

Cheers!
