Just thought I'd throw my 'whacking' experience in here.
Both my 912 and (past) 83 SC require the occasional whack. I was enroute to the inagrual F1 race @ indy in my SC and per Gary's suggestion, I had to park on a hill every time I stopped. Unfortunately, the Denny's parking lot in Bowling Green is dead flat. Nothing a couple of good ole boys couldn't fix!! It was prone to heat soak, once it cooled down it would still need a tap or two.
The 912 needed it only once or twice after sitting for some time.
Throw in a new high torque starter for $250 and move on. One of the easier fixes you'll encounter.
Good luck
Brgds, Peter
