Default Turbo Tie Rods

Hi Folks - I am upgrading to Turbo Tie Rods on my 83SC. I ordered and rec'd the "cheaper" ones thinking they all came from the same "OEM" MFG, and am now having second thoughts. The ones I rec'd have the nylon lock nuts on the tie rod ends. I seem to have read that these are less durable compared to the more "expensive" ones that have the castelated nuts. Should I return these (unused) and get the "more expensive" ones?

Hi Brian:

As you have unfortunately found out, Porsche parts are NOT all the same. Currently, there are many poorly made, counterfeit OEM-looking parts that appear OEM but are cheap copies that are junk. I've been burned as well so I am VERY careful about who I buy from and what they are.

You want the German, Lemforder brand turbo tie-rod kit as thats the real McCoy,....

If I might say so,......NEVER, EVER let price be the main criteria for how you choose what to buy. In the vast majority of cases, you'll get burned and wind up spending the same money, twice.

Just my opinion, tho.

Thanks Steve - that is what I suspected. I do want, and have located, "the real McCoy". I have no problem paying more for quality.....

Steve,

What about the ones on the VertexAuto site? Or to ask more globally what do you think of the OEM products on that site? A co-worker pointed it out to me and I had planned on ordering rotors and shocks from them.

What about the ones on the VertexAuto site?
I don't know if they still do or not, but last time I ordered from Vertex they also had a 3% adder for credit card purchases, which you need to consider in your total cost evaluation (of course check to see if they still do this).

I called Vertex about the rotors they have listed at what appears to be a good price and they are not the OEMs. I cannot recall the brand he told me. The Zimmerman disks were about 50% more if I remember right. Watch the shipping from these guys as well.

TT Rods: I also bought the ones that appeared to be a deal. Sent them back as they were trash. I ordered Lemforders - the difference in quality was very significant. I did not want to do the job twice.

Good Luck.

Regards,
Jim

Vertex is where I got the TT Rods, and they are going back. Their picture shows the castelated nut, and their Mfg. name states OEM. However, the ones I rec'd have the nylon lock nuts. I have since ordered the Lemforders.

Many people have found the rubber boots quickly go bad on the Vertex aftermarket ones. Mine split within a year and I had to buy, install, and align another set(Lemforders). Run forest run.

Thanks guys,

Another headache avoided due to the people at this site. Sounds like I am hearing you can order from Vertex but, be careful what you order.

Thanks for the tip on Vertex & TTR. I've been wondering why I've been paying more ordering from Pelican, so I was going to order TTR & other misc stuff. I guess, as usual, you get what you pay for.

if you know exactly what you're getting, vertex is OK. Getting return credits and core charges is like pulling teeth.
for that rotor guy up there, instockauto.com has free shipping and cheap zimmerman's

Informative thread...

So where is the best place to get 'genuine' turbo tie rods?

Pelican Parts is one that I know of, there may be others. Just make sure they are the Lemforder brand, as supplied to Porsche.

I think I've had the vertex ones on for 2 years. what should I be watching for? do they just fall off or something, or do they just get sloppy?
