Default Are we stupid?

We have a 1977 911s targa (just purchased) and I cannott for the life of me, find the engine#! I have done a search and have looked where the posts suggested but still cannot find the $%$%$@%@%$@ thing. Last night we took off the air cleaner, the ducting, and loosened the ac comp. while we were shining a 500w hal. down into a very clean engine and still no #'s. The reason for this post is we do not believe it is the org. eng. and previous owner was a wholesaler who new 0 about the car. We have receipts for a total(8000) rebuild 10,000 m ago but does not specify the engine type. This engine is much stronger than the 2.7 my assoc. owns, and the curiosity is killing the cat! Tell me something good, fellas.
Thank you, Kevin & Laura

You want the engine type number (e.g. "xxx/xx") should be on the case just to the right of the fan housing... but all that tells you is what the engine started life as... it could have been modified.

To the right of the fan housing, at the base, on a vertical bar will be the number you're looking for.

K & L: It's entirely possible that when your engine was "rebuilt" the case was replaced because the original had a line-bore problem, defective or incorrectly installed case savers, etc. However, if that was the "case" the bill would have been much higher, perhaps in the $12 - 14K range. I guess that the old pistons & cylinders could have been used, but $8K sounds pretty low. Regarding how strong your engine feels can be as simple as having all tune specs set to correct factory specs. You would be surprised at how lethargic a 2.7 can feel that is not tuned correctly, or has been apart and the cams aren't timed correctly, etc.

Thanks , all!
I still cannot find the #. I even have a picture that shows in detail where to look, but these #'s are not there! Crazy, huh?
