Default 911 SC

I am looking at buying a 1980 911 SC Targa. My question is what does SC stand for?
Thanks, Brad

Brad:

The "SC" stands for "Super Carrera".

It stands for "Standard Car" as opposed to the Turbo.

Brad,

Jay is correct.

I have books and books and books on the SC. There is no reference to SC being the abbreviation for "Standard Car".

It is SUPER CARRERA!!

The SC was the replacement for the 70s 3.0 Carrera.

Thanks

To reinforce Wayne's point above (and someone please correct me if I've remembered this wrong), the 911SC's name was derived from the Carrera model that was present during the 2.7 liter series that (in R.O.W. trim) had a 3.0 liter motor along with the larger fender flares (in contrast to the '74 - '77 911S and 911 models which all had 2.7 liter motors and smaller flares). US Carrera models still had the 2.7 liter motor, though I believe they had the wider fender flares like the European Carrera models.

The then new '78 911 got the name 911 Super Carrera, shortened to 911SC, probably to build on the Carrera name used in the previous generation cars. As we all know, the 911 went to only 1 model (other than the Turbo which isn't really included in this discussion) in 1978 and they all had 3.0 liter motors with wider fender flares. I'm sure the marketing department at Porsche had some influence on naming the 911 model for 1978.

It appears that "Super Carrera" is correct. I guess my car just got an upgrade.

whoever said Standard Car as the answer is whacked. How on earth would you think a sports car company, trying to build a racing reputation, would build a car with such a label is beyond me...Standard car?..give me a break...think before you speak please.

Yes, I am seriously whacked but I have seen this reference in the past. Here is one from a Pelican Parts FAQ:

SC This was the standard car (there was also the
turbo for some of theses years) between 1978 and 1983.

Here's the URL:

FAQ

There are others, but I'll go along with Super Carrerra, I like that better anyway.
