Post Heater duct meltdown... Why?

I just discovered that the plastic heater duct has melted down completely where it is supposed to connect to the rubber sleeve that hooks to the heat exchangers in the back drivers corner of the engine compartment. There are drips of plastic on the closest spark plug wire and the inside of the rubber sleve is coated with melted plastic.

Added info -- I can't hear any exaust leaks and nothing has changed that I am aware of over the last few months.
-- The heater blower motor has been dead for more than 9 months. If the car is at speed and the windows are cracked I do get some heat and I have been doing that in the morning to defog the windows. (Hey, it's summer here and I'm lazy!)

Any ideas would be appriciated.
