Until the constitution is overturned, the staff of Total 911 are entitled to their opinion. You are also quite free to start your own magazine about the 928 that totally trashes the 911.

I find this reaction totally laughable - whining about it won't change a thing.
Our constitution doesn't apply to myoptic narrow minded english people...

And we have our own 928 specific magazine, and guess what?? It actually has some intellectual content.

And about the whinning, sadly it changes many things... most of all SALES.

Scott
p.s. I used to have a 911, traded up to a Nissan.

This isn't about 911's....just the ignorance being shown by a couple of 911 owners that are publishing a magazine that has a habit of trashing ALL non-911 Porsches.

I have 3 Porsches now, and will add a 911 to my stable in the not-too-distant future. I appreciate ALL of the fine automobiles created by the P-car gang in Germany.

We DO have a 928 Magazine...it is about 928's, and in it there is nothing AGAINST any car!

The mag publishers started the battle...

Listen guys- these people are allowed their opinions.

I love my 928, and I deeply distrust the 911 series cars because of the phenomenon known as trailing throttle oversteer....

Ahem....

and their backwards air-cooled engines. There's a thread in the 928 Forum that shows Mark Anderson of 928 International fame DESTROYING about 15 911's at Road Atlanta. In one memorable scene...he roars past a 911 while passing under a sign that appropriately says...

"Briggs & Stratton"

At the same time, the guys who wrote the article were, in a nutshell, stating that they didn't care for the 928's relatively high curb weight and slow-revving large displacement engine. Porsche specifically built this car this way- they knew that noise regulations in places like Switzerland and elsewhere would doom the air cooled engine's shriek, and producing high output from a small engine would be very difficult with existant fuel injection technology while still meeting emissions regulations. The answer was a large V8 engine.

-Slow revving large displacement? My '85 is 4.7 liters, which in the grand scheme of things is large, but low-reving? Hello? ALL the power is above 3500 turns on this 2-valve engine, and it revs to 6500 rpm! If you have a problem with a redline that high I might suggest the purchase of a good Japanese motorcycle!

As to the weight: That's just silliness. I weigh about 145 pounds. Put me in my 928 with a half tank of gas and the all-up weight works out to 3450 pounds. A late model 997 weighs about 3400 pounds empty.....and when his majesty Lord PorkChop the magazine writer plops his 250 pound carcass in the seat with a similar 70 pound fuel load...you come up with a figure that nearly matches the curb weight of my mom's car.

-She drives a full-sized Pontiac Bonneville~

Baseless, elitist snobbery. Rob, I haven't read your mag, but from the quotes above it sounds like a forum for spouting about some asinine fixation you have with 911s. If Porsche had the same sort of cranial rectalitis syndrome the Boxster and Cayenne would have never been conceived, Porsche may well have gone under as a result and we would all be driving cars doomed to go the way of the dodo. Not that I'm a big fan of either platform, but the point is that Porsche made many fine automobiles. I'm surprised none of the 356 or other watercooler owners have chimed in, as your tagline seems to insult them too -- along with your wife, kids, friends, etc(if any).

Calling a 928 big and lazy, given that my bone stock weighs within a few gallons of fuel(or a small passenger) what a 996/997 weighs, is just plain silly IMHO.

I am sure 911's are just fine, not my cup of tea. The 928 is the only car Porsche has ever made that has my interest. I have tried to warm up to 911's, honestly I have, but everytime I sit in one I am remided of my dad's 63' VW. Controls are horrid, I feel cramped, the glass is too close, the handling of the car with the rear engine could have been Ralph Nader's next book

Granted the later additions (996) are much better, but why would I subject myself to this when I can have 928. When the brilliant Porsche engineers in the seventies set out to build the next generation Porsche they rightly abandoned everything that a 911 was. The car they came up with was as different from a 911 as a Corvette is from a Chevette. Still 911 owners insisted that this was the true standard bearer, again if it were not for the 928 I would have no use for Porsche.

Just an opinion from one guy who knows how to spend his magazine money

I see you learned how to use the really big font feature DN.
Who's constitution? Based on his pricing he's obviously based in the UK, where I might point out libel and slander laws are much tougher. So, any UK 928 owners wanna take him to task?

Couple of points...

1. We are NOT against ANY other type of Porsche - I think you'll find we are more enthusiastic about the marque than most - as we've said before, the focus on the 911 was a commercial decision to create a niche.

2. We've all owned Porsches; some of us 911s, others a 928.

3. Big & Lazy - my personal opinion is that this is pretty factual; the 928 is bigger than most 911s and the big V8 means there is plenty of low-down torque; in the UK (where the average engine size is around 1.4 litres I'd guess), "lazy torque" is a term often associated with V8s.

4. Phil can respond for himself when he returns, but I would like to apologise if anyone has been offended by that remark; it was not our intention. Sorry.

hhmmmm
It seems that many of the 911 owners who trash 928s have never driven one (let alone owned one), while many of us who have 928s have also owned 911s. A had both a '89 Carrera and my current '87 928 for a number of years, so you could say I did an extended comparison. The two cars are so different that's almost a ludicrous thing to do. But they're both excellent cars, and in no way did I ever consider the 928 inferior.

I'd certainly consider buying another 911, but I'd never consider buying a magazine that spouts such utter nonsense.

Edit:
OK - what exactly does he mean by 'big'?
I did a quick search for specs and here's what I found:

1987 928S4 (my car):
Length: 175.1"
Width: 72.3"
Height: 51.7"

2005 997
Length: 175.6"
Width: 71.2"
Height: 51.2"

Almost identical dimensions!

1987 928S4 (my car):
Curb weight: 3540 lbs

2005 997
Curb Weight: 3075 lbs

So I'm guessing he thinks the 928 is too heavy, eh?

1989 Carrera (the 911 I used to own):
Length: 168.9"
Width: 65.0"
Height: 52.0"
Curb Weight: 2600 lbs

Compared my '89 Carrera the 997 sure seems 'big', doesn't it???

Bill - please don't make assumptions as to what was actually said; the article in queastion was a piece that contradicts those who say that the 911 is comparable to a 928.

To quote our magazine "...to compare a modern 911 with the big, lazy 928 is plain silly"

Is this not what you say in your post - that the 2 cars are different?

To add to the fray, the appearance of the 996 evolution of the 911 looked less "911" and more "928" in my opinion, so i think there is a valid comparison in that vane. Additionally, i do not think any P-car could be considered "LAZY".

In the US, a target market of the Total 911, there is freedom of speech - even for those that are not citizens of our Country.

Again, I am surprised by the outrage and defensive response by this group of Porsche owners. Many magazines have crtiicized the 911 as an antiquated and tired design, but who cares? It does not impact the value of my car or the excitement it provides when driven at the limit.

Libel and slander? Seriously? I would say some of the posts against this magazine are more slanderous than anything that appeared in it. Besides, you would have to prove damages - please explain the damage you have suffered.

It was gracious of Rob to apologize, but I think unnecessary.

If you want to believe the 996 and 997 evolved from the 928, fine - we've already covered this territory ad nauseum

Let's throw in the 993 as well! Isn't the 993 multilink suspension just a revision of the 928 Weissach Axle technology?
