Default I JUST BOUGHT A 911T COUPE 1969 - UPGRADE QUESTIONS

I JUST BOUGHT A 911T COUPE 1969 - AND NOW IT'S TIME FOR UPGRADES!!

How can I determine if a 915 gearbox is 4 or 5-speed when I'm considering buying it? the number on the box is corroded away –is there any other way of telling from viewing the box externally?

911 is sagging in the rear suspension, especially with weight applied (driving with 2 persons in the car) and cornering, it is especially bad in the left side of the car. I think it would probably be the torsion bars needing a changing. Is this correct??

Can I mount 964 Carrera 4 brakes on my 911 1969 without problems? It has 7x15” Fuchs in front and 8 x 15” in the rear.

Thanks & greetings from Denmark
Pete

Welcome to Rennlist, Peter.

Can't help you with all of your questions, but for your rear suspension, I would suspect the springplate bushings are the main culprit. The torsion bars are probably getting tired too, but I don't think it would be as visible as you described. Your shocks will probably need replacing also.

1969 should have the 901 gearbox - 1 will be off and to the left and down. 2-3-4-5 will be in a H pattern.

Don't drive until you get the suspension taken care of.

Can you mount 964 brakes without problems? Sure - how much money do you have? Actually the 964 brakes need quite a bit of machining to make work.

Here is a great resource from Bill Verburg : http://home.nycap.rr.com/wmv/generalbrmd.htm

Hi Pete,
The sagging rear suspension sounds not good. I bought a '71 911T and I had to replace the complete pipe which holds the torsion bars, because it was rusted. This is a big job, remove engine and gear box, cut out the rear seat bottom sheet metal (which needed replacement in my case anyway). Take a good look under the car for that pipe.

Good look

before buying new brakes, replace the hoses & fluid

you surely will need to go thru the entire F &R suspensions and replace every piece of rubber ther - including the rubber donut at the top of the F strut mounts

- that will keep you busy for a while...

Pete: I ssume that you had a PPI done, and the chassis is rust-free? If not, make a PPI happen before any money is spent. Regarding your 7 & 8" wheels, that means that the car already has substantial flares, which leaves you a wide variety of ways to go with your brakes. Unfortunately you're starting with a chassis that has no power brakes, so any upgrades will have to be very carefully thought out, including wheel size requirements. About the 915, if you can't read the numbers you have no choice but to haul the trans to an experienced shop/technician. They can hook up something to the shift fork rod and shift it on the bench. Other than that you have to pull off the nose cover and check for a 5th gear.
