I few days ago I posted the question whether to rebuild a tired 134000 mile 2.7 or to upgrade to a 3.0 or 3.2 . I decided not to rebuild the 2.7; I was set on upgrading to the 3.2. In my search for the new (used) 3.2 I found someone that was rebuilding a 3.0 at a decent price. What are the faults of the 3.0 that I should check for before I buy this engine? He said that he was replacing the head studs with updated ones from race ware.
He also has a 3.2 with 90,000 miles for sale .Which is the better engine?
Thanks
Rick

Rick,
How are you using your Porsche? Racing - what class do you want to be in? Daily driver - I'd go with the 3.2, as a more modern FI system, more hp, a fuel system less likely to be affected by ethanol in gasoline, and you can chip it for a bit more performance. 3.0L engine is limited on what you can do to tweak performance and still keep it emissions legal. On the 3.0L engine, is it an '80 or later with an O2 sensor? I think that simplified engine emissions management a bit.
Is the 3.2 engine rebuilt? If a rebuilder isn't good, they can muck things up which may require additional expense to set right, later. On the 3.2L engine, it would be good to look at leak down values, as some had problems with valve guide wear.

You may wish to check out our buyers guides to the 3.2 to see if this is the car you really want - see www.sportscarguides.com. I originally looked at 3.2s personally and ended up with a 964 C4 ( as featured on our guide).

For what it's worth, I just installed ( or had installed) a 3.0 in place of a 2.7 that had 193,000 miles. The 3.0 was a good fit, the engine was out of a 79'. The 3.2 would have been nice, but $$$ was a major factor. I am fine tuning and getting ready for autocross season in AZ.
Cheers on your decision.
