Angry Wierd starting behavior from '83 SC

Hey guys, my car is getting a little wierd on me lately. Okay, here's the diagnosis: Last weekend when I took her out, the first initial start it fired like a champ and warmed up and set into a wierd lopy idle (like it was running a crazy cam with massive lift/duration or something), i thought that was odd but i let it go. So I take her out for a spin and come back and park her. A half hour or so later i come out to start the car and it turns over, but won't start. Normally I leave the car in neutral with the clutch out and start the car, so i decided to put the clutch in and slip the car into first gear with the clutch still depressed. As I"m doing this, I'm also starting the car and as soon as i slipped the lever into first the car started but set into a real rough idle and when i gave it gas the entire thing was vibrating like crazy. I gave it some more gas and after about 10 seconds everything stopped and the car was back to normal behavior. All throughout last weekend it did this, so I put it back in the garage and I'm not going to take her out this weekend, but call on monday and schedule an appointment for a valve adjustment with my mechanic since I'm starting to hear them tick a little bit. Anyone want to shed some light on this for me? In addition, I also have been noticing a strong gas smell in the cabin when i lean into the throttle from low RPMs, not sure if this is related or not.

Thanks for bringing yet another thing I noticed to my attention too, the car won't idle below 1500-2000 and it's REALLY ANNOYING!!!! Oh well, i guess i'm gonna be ordering a new warm-up valve for the CIS.

Warm start problems (engine running fine, shut off for 20-30 mins, then next to impossible to start) on CIS engines are normally due to one of two problems, both fuel related. Either the fuel accumulator isn't working or the fuel pump check (one-way) valve is giving up the ghost. The accumulator sits next to the engine compartment fuel filter and the check valve is at the fuel pump, and may be built into the head of the pump. If the check valve is bad, just add another one in-line - you don't need to buy a new fuel pump.

My 80SC had the same "loping" problem when starting cold. I also had a hot start problem after sitting for a few hours. I replaced the the fuel accumulator and haven't had the problem since.
