odd tranny swap advice
i am considering the purchase of an air cooled 911. of course most of the older models do not come with a tiptronic option. before you torch me i am a paraplegic so manual transmissions are not a reasonable option. all i drive is two door cars, 250 hp VW GTI, Subaru SVX.
i had been looking at the 928 S4 becasue of the auto tranny. anyway my questions is: if i were to by an older 911, how difficult would it be to get a 964 or 993 tiptronic tranny to work. i really like the older/lighter 911's. if i am insane because of the labor and potential cost involved then please be brutally honest so i dont waiste my time pursuing this any further.

some older ones have a tiptronic - not many tho -- would that work for you?
the later G-50 is hard to put in b/c it is larger and you have to beat the sheet metal out of the way -- some have done it -- I assume the later tips are about the same size. (?)

that would work for me, but how the hell do i find one? do you know of anyone who has done the conversion? i would certainly like to get some cost estimates. i only have about 12-15k to spend up front so that is why i am seeking alternatives. little easy to find a decent n/a 911 for that kind of money than a 964 so far.
thanks for the post....the research begins.

yeah i know the swap would be a very unique one. but you do what you have to do to drive what you want. i may have to save up and get a clean 964. they just dont look like a 911 should though....
thanks again i will check out Pelican and some other sources. i think i will pay a visit to our local porsche repair experts and get some more opinions on feasibility.

928... not an expert here at all, but the Tip is wired into the engine management computer and other systems of the car.... if you were to do this, my bet would be buying the entire drive-train from a Tiptronic 3.6 and a Carrara roller and building a early car around it.
This is not totally infeasible as 3.6 engine swaps into earlier chassis are not uncommon... but I'd budget plenty of money for alot of custom body-work, and head-scratching time.... I'd guess coming in under $30K for the whole project would be a challenge...
Good luck

that is unfortunate but probably what i needed to hear. i really love the 911 SC and Carrera 3.2 but i am **** out of luck in the tranny arena.
oh by the way thanks for the pelican referral that is going to be a hell of a resource.
looks like my only real option is a 964 coupe or targa. which means i need another 5K. damn....

I don't think you are SOL at all. YOu might be able to find an early car with a tip; or find a tip and have it fixed up and put into an early car.
They are not common but it's not like trying to put an auto trans into a NART spyder or something.
If it takes a year of looking would it still be worthwhile? I bet the anser is yes.
