I have an 84 911 Carrera, I bid last night on a whale tale from a 86 targa (did not win). Is there a certain year range/car style that I can use that will bolt right into place. Thanks for the help.

Tails from any year Carrera are the same. DO NOT just buy a tail and drill/bolt it on your un-molested deck lid. There are so many out there that already have the required holes drilled in them that it seems crazy to tamper with an original 'no-tail' decklid.
You'll end up likely having to repaint the tail anyway, so doing both the tail and the decklid shouldn't be much more $$.
You should either save your original decklid for future use, or sell it to offset some of the costs.
IIRC, any decklid (with a tail attached) from 74-89 will work, but the earlier models will have holes from the factory badges, etc. (Later script such as the Carrera on your existing lid, are attached with adhesive).

I have a Carrera whale tale in great shape that I just removed from my 1973 911. I am putting a ducktail lid back on it. The non rubber area is painted maroon and the rubber "wing" section is in perfect condition. I can e-mail you photos if anyone is interested. This is the complete deck lid with Carrera whale tail. whale tail to deck lid seal was replaced last year.
Any interest?

You can't just put a tail only on the car without upsetting the aerodynamics. You will also need the front air dam. There is a a bunch of info opn this in the archives.
