Question Anyone in Portland, OR area willing to help me diagnose 2.7 CIS FI problem?

Hi - I am wondering if there is another Porsche owner in the Portland Area who might be willing to help me diagnose a CIS fuel injections problem with my 1977 911S. Someone who has the CIS FI test guage(s) and is familiar with their use or might be willing to let me borrow (rent?) it for awhile.

If you would be willing to come out to my place for a few hours - I could exchange my own labor on your mechanical projects or buy lunch or a six-pack or whatever - unfortunately, due to circumstances I am financially challenged right now and can't afford to take it to my mechanic.

I have done the major tune-up but I do not have the required CIS guages to diagnose a problem with hard starting and poor idle - once started and running it runs fine above 1000 rpm - but idles rough always, and hard starting takes many tries to get it running.

I almost was going to sell it - but didn't have the heart and would at least like to know that when I fire it up, I can take it for a nice drive occasionally. Its a real bummer having a 911 and not being able to drive it!

Bret,

I don't have the gauges but I had a hard starting problem that I traced to a non-functioning cold start injector. In my case, it was unplugged fromthe microswitch and all I needed to do was plug it back in!

Also, I suffered with a rough idle (surging) due to a rich mixture. You might want to try leaning it out a click or two to see if that helps.

There is a CIS Troubleshooting chart at www.pelicanparts.com in the Tech Articles section. Look there to see if there is anything you should consider before needing the pressure gauges.

Yes, a great resource, but - remember - Steve does work for a living. It's not like the Gamroth org. makes all their money on racing and fixes customer cars for free...

he's always ultra-helpful with advice.. but the question involved using actual hardware...

Hi Bret:

I do not have the CIS fuel pressure gauges anymore (sold 'em years ago) since I no longer work on street cars,....

That item is going to be critical in troubleshooting and fixing your car. One cannot do anything without it on any CIS car.

Although you might not want to hear this; I'd suggest that you get the car to Mike @ Stuttgart Autotech in Lake Grove. He works on CIS cars and has the tools, the knowledge, and the experience to fix that thing, pronto.

Don't sell it man, get it fixed right and enjoy the good weather we finally have.

or kill the CIS and move to EFI or carbs... it just takes $$

Randy, your bias is showing

If Brett is trying to get back on the road for mimium $$, I would suggest he verify that all parts are properly hooked up and there are no vacuum leaks. At that point, a short trip to Mike (my wrench also) may be prudent for a bit of time on the gas anyalzer to check/adjust mixtures. This may solve the problem withut getting into the heavy duty diagnosis of the system. Of course this assumes that the fuel pressure regulators (WUR, fuel pump, accumulator, throttle valve) and controls (fuel distributor, AAV, deceleration valve) are operating properly and only an adjustment is needed.

You can't go wrong with Steve's suggestion above. I also have a 77911S and take it to Mike and Jess at Stuggart Autotech and they are great! Always have the time to explain things in detail or steer me away from unnecessary "concerns" I have.

Ditto on Mike at Stuttgart. He's always been very helpfull to me and my 82 SC. Very fair on prices also. He's saved me time and money in the long run.
