Default Oil Cooler Crud

Noticed the front oil cooler (83SC) has a lot of road grime, tar and other crud really stuck hard all over it . It is possible all this stuff is affecting the cooling performance of the unit?

Thanks.

Yes, debris stuck to a cooler can certainly get in the way of heat dissipation. How much is anyone's guess...

Not a big hit IMNSHO - but why not blast it clean anyway? Got a press. washer?

I use Simple Green and my pressure washer on my 28-tube Carrera oil cooler once a year. You should get that crud off the brass tubes because it cuts down the cooling effeciency of your cooler.

On a somewhat related note, if any of you have a finned cooler like a Carrera, 964, or 993, you really should get a can of engine degreaser and soak/wash thoroughly. I just did this on my 993 (see recent thread on 993 board) and was VERY surprised at how much cooler it ran. Hope this helps

Thanks guys. Overheating has not been an issue (gets a little warmer on hill climbs) but I figured it's gotta be affecting the overall cooling effeciency.

Should I be removing the unit to clean it or just do it in situ?

No need to remove the cooler, just lift the right front corner and remove the wheel. You then have good access to the cooler.

Use a good strong cleaning solvent and water to remove the crud.
