Default shift bushings

I am awaiting the arrival of my new shift bushings, and would like to know if there is anything I need to be aware of before attacking this project. As always any help is greatly appreciated. This forum is a wonderful resource for any diy'ers and I'm grateful to have so many knowledgable folks willing to share their experiences.

Haven't done this job myself, but the latest issue (Aug. '05) of Excellence has DIY article that seemed pretty good. It should still be available in stores.

Don't know which bushings in particular you'll be changing, however, they are not difficult. When I put the factory short shift kit in my 911SC, I renewed any bushing that could be renewed, including the joint under the plate in the center console behind the seats. The only slightly tricky part is adjusting that joint so you'll be able to get into gear - I want to say there are several write ups on that, or it's probably in the Bentley manual too.

Did mine last year. I was surprised at how easy it was.....Was a 1/2 job.....My old ones at the coupler were completely gone. Now wonder I was having problems....

Did mine a couple months ago and the Bentley had a nice write-up.

I just started tackling this last night on my 84 Carrera and am having a heck of a time with the center console. I've been using the instructions in the Bentley and the latest issue of Excellence, but the AC and stereo fader controls are a real b---h to get out. The "connector" referenced in the Bentley to just disconnect that harness isn't there. I pulled the panel our of the passenger's side footwell and that particular wire bundle seems to go into the floor and through the firewall... no connector that I can see.

I'm going back out to work on it again, but if any of you have any particular suggestions, that'd be great as I suspect I'll be right back here in a few hours (if not sooner), still frustrated.

Ok... I got the thing out. The AC controls came out fine, and I finally just pulled on the stereo fader wire bundle (mostly in frustration) and the connector for it was tucked down in the tunnel. So I got all of the bushings replaced in the front... on to the back, but instead of replacing the coupling bushings, I think I'm going to order a new coupling.

I also had a very difficult time with the center console removal. In order to get the A/C temp control unit out I had to cut the hole bigger.

Getting the bushing inside the shift rod bracket was a lot of fun also. I hope I never have to do this job again. I didn't bother with the rear coupler bushings. Eventually I'll just replace the whole coupler with the Wevo one.

I did finish mine, and the rear coupler wasn't a problem either.... I spent the 15$ to have a machine shop press out the pin and replace it. WOW what a difference in the shifting. With the exception of 2nd gear it shifts beautifully, but 2nd seems to have some resistance- it doesn't grind but takes a little effort to pull the shifter into place, readjusted the rear coupler trying several methods which I found suggested here, pelican, and in 101 projects for your porsche. anyone have similar problems?

Everyone who drives a 915 has that problem. That's just the way they are.
