Unhappy Top end rebuild hour estimate

In need of a top end rebuild. How many hours should a shop charge, excluding machine work.

Anderson's build list says 40 for a complete rebuild, and this is the close to what I am getting quotes for the top end only.

Any thoughts?

Not sure about hours, but I've heard estimates of $4-6k for a top-end rebuild, all-inclusive.

I recall top end rebuild quotes in the 30 hour range.

for the valve grind labor, i charge 30 hours plus parts. it ends up around $3K with all new valves, guides, gaskets, and misc tuneup parts. add more time (and parts $) if the pistons and cylinders are replaced along with the valve grind, (or just the rings are replaced), along with rod bolts, and rod bearings, and rod bushings.

Cool

Interesting question and answer, but how much for rebuilding the heads alone in labor and parts? Seems like the 30 hours is the price for R&R engine trans, dissasembly and reassembly.

Top end-30hrs. Most shops send the heads/valves/etc out for all the machine work.

I paid $3800 for a top end last year. This included valves/grinding, misc parts, thorough cleaning, and installation of extra parts supplied by me (new spring clutch, g-50 update, starter, ring gear, rocker shafts, cam oil line brackets...etc.).
Total cost with all the "extra parts" was a bit over $5.5k.

I was bitten by a case of "while you are in there".

Cool

Thanks, but I am still looking at the price if I deliver the heads to the machine shop.

as far as the cost of just doing the heads goes, there is probably 4 hours spent degreasing, glass beading, replacing and sizing the guides, cutting seats, checking valve contact, setting spring height, and assembly. that's $320 @80hr. add $200 to flycut if needed, add all new valves, springs, seals, and you get $800-$1000 just for the heads. a less expensive way is to reuse all the old worn out parts, but who would want to do that?
