Rust:

In the rockers/door jambs. Check under the sill trim plates. Bubbling means there's a hole.

Check the rear window, especially the lower part. Also look from motor compartment side, underneath for holes.

Lift all carpets (if you can) to look for water or rust. Rear windows (side ones too) tend to leak when the seals dry out. This lets in moisture.

Front windshield, especially the lower portions. Again, bubbling probably means there's a hole.

All along outer rocker trim...especially on the front fender. Can rust from inside out there.

JCP is right...it truly can be anywhere. Just take your time and look over everything if you can.

Good luck!

SS sounds interesting... one more thought.... assuming the car is basically sound, also make sure you are ok with the overall cosmetics of the car....it costs just as much to re-do a slightly scruffy car as one that is really gone... if you have any intentions to "restore" the car stop.... you will be better off paying top dollar for a showcar than doing it yourself...

Also, a couple of new parts have a way of making the rest of the car look worse... you can get on that treadmill pretty quick, too.

Rust anywhere around the rear suspension mounts or across the rear tunnel between the two rear suspension points can be very expensive to fix.

Ian.

Well, a quick update on the car I am looking at. I had a friend in the area take a peak at the car for me. Sounds as though it is rougher than originally described and probably in need of a trans rebuild. Ugh.

Waiting for the cd with the high res photos (90 of them) to see if I should proceed or not. Sounding like it will probably be not.

Don't feel bad if it's the "not"...probably the smartest thing you can do is turn down a rough Porsche. Trust me, you can sink a lot of money into those. If it doesn't pan out, just keep looking. A good car will show up eventually.

Good luck!

SS... don't marry a girl because she lives close-by and don't buy an old Porsche becasue it is "cheap"... there is no such thing as a "cheap" Porsche... only some that are more expensive than others.... "E"s are neat cars... stay patient and pay what it takes to get what you want and you will be happy for a long time

I am pretty cold hearted when it comes to cars. I have had enough of them that I don't tend to get too attached. Now, if there were a Ferrari 250 LM, it could be held together with bailing wire and duct tape and still look perfect to me. But a 911 E isn't my dream car, just a potentially fun car to have for awhile as I move up the ladder.

I get the images tomorrow and I can decide for myself whether it is worth further investigation. I have a line a 911 T where my folks live and I am also looking at a really nice low mile '88 BMW 325ix, so my eyes are still wandering. The grass is always greener.

A small-bumper Porsche is a collectalbe... the BMW is just an old used car IMHO.

So, I got pictures today and they are much better than I thought after getting my friends description. One of the reasons I picked him to look at it was because he is about as **** as they come. He snapped 75 photos in high res for me including about 25 of the underside. Not a hint of rust anywhere and the car looks super straight. The interior is definitely the weakest link cosmetically, but I was expecting that and planning to update the seats, door panels and get a new dash. Game on! PPI is next.

Well, I found a local shop to do the PPI that seems to know what they are doing. They maintain 4 local 911s for customers and the owner used to have a '72 E, so he knows the early cars. It is going in on Monday.

Peter, thanks for the list for the PPI you posted. I am sending that to the shop as a guide for their PPI. They are going to do a full leak-down as well.
