Unhappy GAS/OIL MIXTURE IN EXHAUST

While trying to start my 1974 911 [CSI] i experienced lots of back firing and was not able to start. After giving up, I noticed a mixture of gas and oil leaking from the flange connection joining the heat exchanger and muffler under the car. Nothing unusual after examining plugs. I assume the next move would be to do a compression test to determine if internal damage occured. Engine cranks over with no evidence of any broken engine components.

Any suggestions or coments would be most appreciated
