Default smoke on start up '82 SC

Guys,

My SC has started blowing a little smoke on start-up. I have only recently bought the car and it appears that it has not been used a lot in the last few years.

It will only smoke when started from cold after a previous day's "spirited driving" (!!!)

Also, a friend did mention that when I flew past him (revving at approx 5k) the car was splurting a bit of oil. The exhaust pipe does not show any signs of oil. However, the valve covers and timing covers need new gaskets and also the rear crank oil seal needs looking at - I am putting the oil splurt down to this.

Any ideas?? Am I right in thinking that the return tubes need replacing causing smoke on start-up.

Also, there is no smoke on accelaration and the car is running 3+ psi while cruising, this will drop to approx 1-2 psi on idle.

My 83SC did the same thing ! this is somewhat normal. The way it was explained to me
is with opposing cylinders on a horizional plane on an older engine you are going to
get some seapage. If you start getting smoke on deaccelaration.... you got
other problems.
Good Luck

Thanks Chuck,

Luckily, no smoke on deaccelaration and the engine pulls like a train so there ain't no compression issues.

Would oil dripping on to heat exchangers cause smoke in mornings??

I do not think the exchangers are hot enough on start up to smoke. I had oil on my
heat exchangers and I did not notice any smoke from them. I had 250,000 miles
on an origional motor, I had just noticed a bad head gasket and was getting smoke
on deaccelatration when I totaled the car two years ago, it was ready for a rebuild
anyway. It still ran great all the way to the end !
Good Luck

My 82 smokes a bit on start up, in particular if I don't let it idle before I put it away. It seems if I let the oil pump back into the tank, I don't get smoke on start up.
