I've got my calipers off on my 85 to re-build and paint them and am wondering if it is safe to clean them in a parts washer using that solvent. My buddy has a shop and offered the use of the washer which would save me alot of time cleaning them. The manual said that only alcohol is permissible for cleaning. I will do the pistons with alcohol easy enough but how about the calipers in a parts washer?
Also is there any drawback to removing the dust shields? I don't drive in bad weather ever.
Can I also get opinions on my front pads which when placed together (pad surface to surface) shows a slight gap, perhaps 1/16 to 1/8 inch indicating some sort of cupping on the rotor or does this indicate nothing?
Thanks for your help,
Gost

Gost:
Follow the manual's recommendations; clean them in alcohol or Brake Cleaner.
If you participate in track events, then you can remove the shields for a bit better cooling. If you do not take the car to the track, I would leave them in place as they help keep foreign material away from the inner grease seal and thus, inner wheel bearings.
I'd have to see your pads,......
Post a nice sharp, close-up picture.

Hi Steve. I can't attach a photo now. When I try to download to this sight I'm told the file is too large. I'll have to take another pic tomorrow and post that. Funny, I've had no problem downloading pics in the same sequence on other sites.
Thanks again

Gost,
As you discovered, there is a limit to how large a picture can be loaded. Just use any of the available photo editors to resize the picture to something smaller.
