Unhappy engine swap advice needed, HELP!

Hello everyone,

I have a 1980 SC chassis without engine, I'm planning on doing a Ruf CTR replica, I'm going the lightweight route, racing seats, RS doorpanels and no back seats, plus a rollcage and big red brakes.

I'm faced with the dilema of buying a 3.0l engine, upgrading to a 3.2l (maybe euro-spec), going a bit crazy and expensive by installing a 3.6l, but doing the math it might be cheaper to just install a turbo engine, of which I'm offered a good deal on a 3.0l with intercooler and K27, or maybe a 3.3l?

Going turbo might be a more "pure" approach to the replica, but bear in mind my other car (dailydriver) is a 993 Turbo with the X50 power option (430hp, ROW spec car), So I really dont need "that much power" and I also like the NA engines (used to have BMW M series also euro spec), but I feal a 3.0l allthough a very rev-happy engine is nice,a 3.2l conversion ain't that much more expensive, now a 3.6? NOW THOSE ARE BIG BUCKS ALMOST TURBO MONEY!

So, I'm asking for all of your imputs here, pro's and con's. (swampmonster) and NO I WONT GO V8, I think it retracts from what a porsche is.

Thanks,
David <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

If you do drop a Turbo engine in, then you should be sure and upgrade the suspension to a 930 suspension, which is more than shocks and torsion bars - it affects, for example, where the rear swing arms attach to the body. Bruce Anderson has some good discussion in his "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" that may help you.

Bill,

Is moving the rear suspension attachment points really that necesary? I've also rear about the carrera body not benefiting "at all" from the Turbo pick up points, in fact I read this also form Bruce Anderson, although he clearly says that, he has changed his mind based on the performance of certain kit.

Brakes I will do, in fact I'm going to coilover suspension. But please, don't forget about if you were me, which way would you go?

Thanks,
David

If it were me, and I was planning on building a Turbo-based RUF look-alike, I'd start with a 964 chassis. But given you have an SC chassis on hand, I'd probably plan to drop in a 3.6L, which is fairly common, so there's lots of good information available on how to do this. Maybe upgrade it to RSR specs (engine/suspension). It's easy to play with someone elses money
