Post Oil Return Tubes

Is it possible to replace the oil return tubes on an '85 911 without removing the heat exchangers? I'm trying to avoid breaking the head studs when removing the heat exchanger nuts. I understand that on high mileage cars that is a very real possibility.

I just pulled the exhaust off my car and I cant see how you could replace the tubes with the exhaust on.

I've talked to people who have done it with the heat exchangers on, however, it's more difficult that way.

SGEP,
It could be installed without removing the heat exchangers but it was very awkward and difficult. I installed 2 return tubes on one side without removing the heat exchanger but decided to remove the other heat exchanger for the other 2 oil return tubes.

Next time I'll do similar project, I'll remove the heat exchangers. It will be quicker and convenient to install the new tubes. Good luck...

I believe your '85 is just like my '86 and I did it as have many others. If your car has air injectors the left exchanger has to come off if the engine has the air injection tubing in place. on the right side, only the injection tubing has to be seperated from the injectors, to provide clearance.

I did it no problem. A little tight, but doable.

Thank you for all your comments. I'm going to try to change the oil return tubes without removing the heat exchangers. I'll let you know how it goes.

i only use the gold colored, steel telescoping tubes. the aluminum ones don't collapse enough to get in the left side. a couple of long handled needlenose pliers helps to get the green rubber seals into place. use only silicone paste as a lube. (dow 111). oil does not work well to install these.
