Post 1986 911 Coupe

I have again an option to purchase a 1986 Coupe.
Mileage 116k. Full leather, vp/tc, sunroof, special factory color, Blaupunkt Reno 2, power seats. Optioned out MSRP was $48070.00.
All records from day one with new clutch, brake discs and shock absorbers in the last 1000 miles.
Compression is weel within limits.

Asking is $13,500.00.

Is this reasonable in the current market. The car is really spotless.

Have you driven it? How's the tranny? Problems shifting into first and/or second? If the tranny checks out and everythig else from the PPI was good, I'd say you'd be getting it for a good price. A friend of mine had an '86 that he sold at 175k without a rebuild.

I'm in the market to buy one too. Get educated. I think you have to learn the right questions to ask and how to make a good judgment on your own. I'm not very well educated yet, but I'm working on it. It may be a perfect car. It may be a bad car. I got a couple of books from pelicanparts

The Used 911 Story by Peter Zimmermann
Porsche 911 Buyers Guide By Randy Leffingwell
p://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/book_catalog.htm
I don't know that these are the best books on the subject, but they will undoubtedly be helpful. And a little scary! Even if this car your looking at is perfect, If your not ready to own a Porsche until 3 months from now, its the wrong car for you... That was a little advice from my daddy on buying a house... Like it says in the book
"The Porsche 911 is one of the finest sports cars ever made. These fantastic machines have become affordable to purchase provided you know what your buying. Your dream car could turn into a nightmarish money pit if you are not prepared."
But If your a gambler... PPI PPI PPI PPI
prepurchaseinspection... Even so... I don't know if a mechanic can tell you if the airbox is going to explode the next time you go to start it. That's only an SC problem though right?
Keep asking questions and you will get the right car if you want one and are patient.
The people on this board are really amazing. I haven't found to many places on this planet where people were so educated about a subject and were so willing to share that knowledge...(Brown nose)
IT IS PORSCHE!!!!!

Take your time, Its a buyers market.

Jon,
The shifts are actually better than my 1990 964.
The only problem I have is a slight shimmy on braking which I suspect the brake job was not done properly. I intend to get this redone.

Thanks for the reply.

Mike,
I am actually a short term 911 (964) owner. 11 years to be exact.

I am in no hurry to buy but this a friend of mine trading and the dealership is offering him the $13,500. I would rather sell it to me for that price.

Thanks for your reply though.

My only problem is garaging.. The friend selling though has a removal company and will store it for free in his facility. But it will not be home
with the 964 and the Merc and the BMW and....

You posted the dumb *** bit....lol.

I'll stand in line for that one too. It sounds like it's exactly what I've been looking for.

Good Luck!

deons -
I own an '86 911 coupe with full leather, front spoiler, tail, in excellent condition. 2 1/2 years ago I purchased for $20K. It had 73K miles on it and now has 79K miles. I thought I got a good deal. I would not sell for less than $20k now.

I just checked in Panorama and the least expensive '86 listed for sell was going for $17K (no milage listed) and all others ranged from between $19.5K with 118K miles to $29K with 27K miles on it. The average price came in about $23.5K. There are 9 '86s listed for sale this month.

Get a PPI done and if all checks out, I would jump on it!

Good luck!

OK guys I have gone for it. PPI checks out other than front brake rotors, maybe front alignment and left rearview mirror glass loose.

So now I need to post some pictures for you guys.
How do I do this? <img border="0" alt="[blabla]" title="" src="graemlins/a_smil17.gif" /> .

I might sell one of the two early spring.

Deon.

Congrat's on the purchase!

Let me know if you want to flip it for a quick profit. I guess there is truth to the addage: Always buy low

Ok guys. This is what they look like.

This is the newly aquired 86. I will be out there cleaning the rims shortly.

This is my old reliable 964. Friend for a long time or short for the oldtimer Porsche owners.

has expired.

Thanx.
Deon.
