600 miles in the SC without a backfire until tonight! The cause I am pretty sure was a near on empty tank of gas combined with a 1st gear accelleration up a steep hill. Engine stuttered, running on fumes then...
B*A*N*G!!!
Scared the crap outta me and must have woken a hundred sleepy residents from their gentle slumbers as well. First thing I did was check the airbox had not exploded into a thousand tiny pieces, and while it looked like it had moved I could not detect any obvious damage.
So questions:
1) What kind of damage should I be looking for after a major backfire?
2) What other damage can a backfire cause that I cannot see?
3) Where can I buy some backfire proof underpants?
Thanks as usual for any input!
PS And yes, I am going to fit a pop-off valve ASAP!

Airbox separates at the seams...
New intake manifold will solve the backfire forever.
The bad news is that the "standard" backfire that typically blows up the airbox only happens at startup.
You need to look someplace else as to why you had a backfire, could be serious.
