Brad: A conversion can be done beautifully to a '72. However, your technician will have to want to do it, love doing it, and have extensive experience with early cars. You will need a 915 transmission ('72-74 with the 7:31 ring & pinion would be best), but '75 - 86 transmissions (8:31 ring & pinion) will also be OK. These transmissions are getting to be what's considered as old, so there is a lot to know in selecting one. You should find a shift tower from an SC (they are better), and a 915 based clutch and flywheel. You have lot's of options regarding clutch release systems; straight cables, right angle cables, hook-type cables, depending on what type of pedal assembly and release fork assembly that you end up with. The pedal assembly and shift tower should be reconditioned, the clutch cable should be new, and the trans should be freshened up. If you can't find an early trans with the appropriate mechanical drive for the speedometer you will have to somehow adapt a speedo depending on what trans you end up with. The whole job will probably cost you about $6 - 8K, it all depends how much you end up having invested in the transmission.
