Default new tires for 911SC w/ Fiskses

I would like to purchase some street tires to swap withh my racing tires on my Fikse wheels. Currently have:

Fikse 8x17, 9x17
Kumho V700 Victoracer 225-45-17, 255-40-17

The Kumhos are a pretty tight fit up front and tend to rub on the fender well (especially left) during sharp turns. I'm writing to see if there is someone with the above wheel setup on a 911SC/Carrera who is using max performance tires - I'd like to know what brands/models you have tried on the above Fikse sizes and how they fit.

Looking through Tirerack's spec sheets, there seems to be quite a bit of variation in the section width and tread width between different tire models in the same size...

Currrently considering Bridgestone S03s (primarily street use, maybe a few autocrosses) - would also appreciate any firsthand comments on this tire.

Thanks,

Jeff

The front is really tight w/ bigger wheels and tires, for 8x17 o/s from +25 to +31 seem to work best the smaller +o/s has more trouble at the lip the larger +o/s has more trouble at the inner fender.

Shaved lips and rubbing plates on the fender wall are the norm for these setups

The 225/45x17 SO3 is taller but narrower than the Kumho, it will rub more in hard turns, one solution that my MD always recommens is don't do that.

Thank you very much for your reply!

Yes, the "don't do that" is always good advice I only encounter rubbing problems w/ the Kumhos at the autox, never on the track.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what do you mean by "+o/s"? Is that "offset"? Not sure what mine are, but can check...

Also, what is a 'rubbing plate'?

Re: the S03 being "taller but narrower" - are you referring to overall diameter and section width, respectively? Tire Rack lists the V700 in 225-45-17 as 24.6" overall diameter, which is, amazingly, smaller than any street tire that I looked at in that size (most are 25.0-25.2").

FWIW, car is lowered / corner balanced, rolled fender lips up front, -1.5/2.5 degrees neg camber, 22/29 t-bars, charlie bars, turbo tie rods, strut tower brace, etc.

A few searches in the rennlist forums since my original post have turned up a lot of negative press re: S03. Will consider some other options, perhaps Kumho ECSTA MX.

Looks like the rubbing plate is primarily to save the paint or insulation on the tub? Mine wheel well is not nicely painted like that so...

Thanks again!

That's probably it! I thought it was some sort of insulation or soundproofing - guess it's mostly R1 compound...

prssure wash & a strong detergent will remove it - BTW, Castrol Purple will change the color... and ruin finished paint.

I'm bumping this - surely some of you are running 8x17 and 9x17 Fikse wheels on a 78-89 911? What tires are you using (brand/model/sizes)? How do they fit?

I am running Bridgestone SO2's 205/50-17 and 225/40-17 w/ no rubbing issues...however the PO had the car set up way too low and he had a few rubbing issues, I had the car raised up to Euro specs and now no rubbing (@ ALL)

Jeff,

I get away with 205/50/17 fronts and 245/45/17 rears on my sc with no rubbing. I had 265/35/18 on the rear on a different set of rims and they were awful. Stuck out too much. Try the baseball bat method to roll the inside lips in. Did mine yesterday.

Cool. Does the car push badly with that much of a width differential (205 / 255)?

Am considering either
215/45/17 and 245/40/17, or
225/45/17 and 255/40/17

The latter sizes are what I am running now in Kumho Victoracer V700, but the V700s seem to have a smaller diameter than all other tires in same sizes. So, I'm concerned that the same sizes in a street tire will rub (worse than the Kumhos already do).
