Default Painting my fuchs....the lazy mans way....

I have read plenty of articles on how to properly refinish fuchs. Now lets talk about the redneck way of doing it. Has anyone simply sprayed on new paint? (Yes, I am thinking of buying satin black spray paint at Home Depot and just taping them up and going for it.....)

Its the striping part I want to avoid. The old paint is bad enough, but the anodizing...yikes. I realized that the finish is not going to be particularly durable, and I am ok with that. The car is a bit of a garage queen anyway.

Has anyone done this, and had it look remotely good?

I do have access to a paint gun and compressor if that would improve things...

Eastwood has some good products for painting wheels. I would go there before the Home Depot. Check out their website at:

http://www.eastwoodco.com/

What articles are you referring to. I have the same project on my to-do list. I was hoping somebody on Rennlist might know of a refinisher in the Chicago area?

What Jeff said. The wheels get pretty hot under braking, especially if you do a drivers ed. you need a wheel paint that will withstand the heat or it will turn gray.

LOL!!!
I was thinking the very same thing! I just want to get rid of some of the chipping the PO had on the black centers. And my feeling is that "it's a track car...who's gonna notice."

Interesting thought on the heat affecting the paint. How about the Wurth paint from their webpage. Is this ok to spray on w/o stripping off the black?

I painted my fuch, I used black satin chip resistant enamel.
The frosted base was powder coated by my brother's company.

I repainted my wheels about 10 years ago and they are starting to look it. I used Wurth semi-gloss black and--here's the important bit--3M Trimline masking tape. This tape does not allow the paint to creep under it, yielding razor sharp lines. don't use ordinary masking tape. Should be available wherever they sell body shop supplies.

Dumb question: Do you have to do it with the tires removed or can an decent job be done with the tires mounted?

Other dumb Q: Mine are actually painted black till 1/2 way down the sides of the rim, i.e way too much. Makes them look like 3" wheels ! ;-) What can I use to remove that without damaging the silver stuff behind it (other than my nails ? they work but I am running out of hands) ?

@theclaw, you can leave the tires on if you are just painting the centers. Just make sure to tape everything off very well.

Does anyone know where to get Wurths matte black paint? I have looked all over on the internet and have found just about every Wurths product except that.....

Pelican has Satin Black - I think Larry Reynolds does too (carcareonline.com) or is matte something else? If so, try the Wurth web site and ask them who will carry it.

I used semi-gloss black krylon on my fuchs back in '96, they still looked good when I sold the car last year.

I painted mine about 8 years ago with Glasurit 21 line acrylic urethane and they still look new. I don't think you can buy it anymore. Whatever you do, use good paint. If you use cheap paint you'll be sorry. Wurth is probably the best you can buy in a spray can. Gaunt is right about the masking tape.

I painted mine last year and used Rustoleum black satin. It worked great. I used Aircraft remover to remove the old paint (previous owner had painted them RED!). It bubbled the paint off and didn't seem to bother the anodizing. I used black eletrical tape on the pedals (this was a 1970 car that I left the pedals exposed). The electrical tape is great for working in the corners because it is pliable. You just have to be sure to press it in firmly and cut slits at the top so it gives, then mask very well. Since the pedals will be black, all you will be masking are the rims, should be easy. I took my wheels off because I was stripping etc., I would probably still remove them as I would be afraid of over spray. I am also a nervous Porsche owner. Although I'm not sure if I own the car or if it owns me!! I also took masking tape to the back side of the lugnut/pedal holes so paint didn't go through.

I lightly sanded the gold fuchs I bought cheap with semifine sandpaper 800-1000 grit. Then wiped them down with PRE to get dirt, chemicals, wax etc. off. Masked with the 3M so the paint doesn't lift with the tape, and painted 4-5 light coats of Eastwood Black Satin paint-suggested by John Paterek, PCA Concours and restorer extrordinaire. These are my track wheels and have held up amazingly for two years without major blemishes/irregularities. On a more professional job on my street fuchs, they were resprayed with Satin Black from Eastwood and look great.

What about the bare aluminum? Mine's pretty dingy but if I use a polish or cleaner it will make it shiny rather than have that brushed Al look. Any suggestions on how to freshen that up?
