Default Repairing A/C vents

Hi Gruppe,

This is for those of you who have the York under-dash A/C unit on your earlier car, like mine:

As you probably know by now, the AC vents have those pesky plastic pins on the back to hold the vent on the A/C plenum. Pesky because the darn things break, even if you aren't working with them.

Well, after finding out they are NLA (at least at my sources, even used) I decided to fix it.

The solution is bicycle spokes. Yes, spokes.

Take your spokes, and cut off the threaded end about 1/8 longer than the spoke nipple. Drill an appropriate size hole in the vent, being careful not to drill through. The area where the hole goes is where the vent housing is tapered, so the plastic is not as thick as you think, looking at the side of the unit. Drill press strongly recommended.

After that, just epoxy the spoke end and nipple to the vent ***'y and bingo, you're done!

The diameter of the spoke nipple is so close to the diameter of the original plastic pin as to not matter.

Hope this is not an answer to a question not asked.
