Default 1980 911 SC. are SSIs with dual outlet exhaust possible?

Anyone know if SSIs can be configured with dual outlet exhaust for a 1980 911 SC? From what I can tell, possibly some 1000 dollar newer looking mufflers might work as opposed to the standard looking sausage muffler. I dont want to pay that much for a muffler though. Are all the sausage muffler's aluminum? Should I get a reproduction or an original if there are no newer style mufflers and/or dual exhaust options.

Thanks!

Hi Seth:

SSI's are individual, separate 3-into-1 heat exchangers that permit one to install any factory-type muffler you wish.

Some of those mufflers are available in dual outlet versions and one can certainly fabricate something if one has the resources and the knowledge to make something better,.....

Although you might not wish to hear this, I must tell you that you get what you pay for here as some mufflers will cost you power and drivability.

Factory-style mufflers come in mild steel, SS outer skin with mild steel interiors, and all SS steel (inside & out). 911's are quite sensitive about exhaust tuning and some mufflers that look quite nice do not perform very well.

Hi Seth,

Indeed, Steve's the expert on this. And FWIW, I have read about and met numerous folks who have been down this road and "saved" money on a system, only to find that the car ran poorly, had flat spots, annoying resonance, and the like. The best thing to do is to get others' advice on what they use, and to hear for yourself when possible (attend a PCA event and you'll find at least half a dozen folks with different SSI/muffler combinations.

As for my 82SC, I have SSIs with a stainless Dansk 2into1 (they can be had 2into2) and I like it a lot! The power is smooth, seamless, and has a nice gutteral rumble to it with no resonance (!) while only being modestly louder than stock. Hope this helps.

Steve -

Which mufflers do you reccommend or have had the best results with? I've seen a lot written on B&B (mostly bad comments), Bursch (mixed comments) and Dansk (mostly positive comments).

I'm driving an '81SC w/ stock heat exchangers and mostly use the car on the track.

Seth:

I had the good fortune to attend Bruce Anderson and Jerry Woods' engine rebuilding school (it was great!!), and they said for an early engine (I am doing a 2.0 litermotor) that SSI's and the dual outlet sport muffler were worth 13 horsepower.

Is that the reason for the dual outlets?

Steve, are the sport mufflers still the "hot" setup?

Matt:

I've had the best luck with Monty mufflers for street cars. They are FAR better quality than Dansk and they make a bit more HP.

For race cars, we build a system for these express applications but its too loud for street use.

Tom:

The early twin-pipe sport muffler is still pretty good for 2.0-3.2 engines although not everyone likes the raspy sound,.... For track-only usage, there are some better options.

Best twin out you can buy for performance AND value is the Triad and there are dyno figures at the website showing comparisons with other systems. I've been running one for a while now, bit loud but no retuning needed and there is a definite power increase with SSI or early HEs.

Seth,

I have SSIs going into a 2 in, 1 out Bursch muffler on my '81SC. I have had no resonance, just a terrific (to my ears) throaty (and somewhat loud) exhaust that makes the car sound like a sports car. I value Steve W's advice but was unwilling at the time to spend the money on the Monty muffler. That's next time.

Dansk is a very good muffler. The grey painted stainless costs around $350.00, I think. I had a Bursch before and liked the sound but I did have some resonance on the highway, around 3500 RPM's. All other mufflers that I heard were a little too loud for my taste. If you are mostly tracking you may want to go with a 2 in 2 out and look at some of the others mentioned above.
