Using Swepco 210 instead of 201?

Post Using Swepco 210 instead of 201?

Hi Guys,

I have a slight delemma, I have been able to find only one place that sells Swepco oils in Australia. They don't have 201, and unless there is a high demand application don't get it in. The gentleman does have on offer Swepco 210 80w-140 with moly added. Original set up for a racing car.

Is this a good enough substitute. I have 201 on order from the states but it is cheaper to get this 210 locally. What is the verdict?

Dana, my advice/opinion would be to stick with Swepco 201...the 210 is fairly thick when compared to the 75w-90 that the 201 is...as you mentioned, this is for racing, where VERY high heat conditions exist in the trans.

Basically, I think you might have some shifting issues under normal operation...and if I remember correctly, when I had a 911SC with a 915 trans. - I certainly didn't need anything else to add to the "iffy" shifting issues.

Dana, I am assuming you have a 911 with a 915 gearbox...being that you're looking into using Swepco - PEOPLE, this is a good example to point out...you need to include the model/year of P-Car when posting to this site. All too often we forget to add what year/model of P-car we have, so go into "my profile" and create a signature, it's easy, and it helps us help you!

I know someone is going to "chime in" and say that their 915 is perfect, and that they work great if built/maintained correctly, I agree, but this is NOT a perfect world - and 915s are well noted for their inconsistencies.

My 915 tranny is perfect. My world is not. <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" /> Had to say it <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" /> !
That being said- the 201 is thick enough as it is. My shifter is "iffy" as you say until the swepco warms up and thins out a bit. I wouldn't want to go any thicker on the gear lube.

Jeff,

Apologies for not including that it was a 915 Transmission, however, I was working on the assumption that anyone who knew about Swepco oils would know that its only generally recommended for the 915 Transmissions. (I have never seen it recommended for anything but the 915 and 901).

I concur Dana, if you had a G-50 , I would advise to use Mobile 1.

I have been researching the 210.I use the 201 now and although the 210 is thicker I live in central Texas where heat is constant during the summer.The 201 made a huge difference and I never notice a difference in shifting if my tranny is cold or hot, it always shifts the same,which isn't bad although I am fighting off a rebuild.I have worn syncros in first and second but with 227,000 on an origional tranny this isn't bad.
I am under the impression that the 210 will help compensate for the wear on my high milage tranny along with the heat here in Texas.

As a data point, I've used 201, 203 and 212, and honestly haven't noticed a difference between any of them. But I'm in Southern California, which has a pretty narrow range of temperatures (warm to hot).
