I saw one of these today. What is the story behind them?

I noticed a few nice things

1) no sunroof
2) roll-up windows
3) Matter roll bar

Owner said 1 of 28 US cars.

I know there is nice story behind these.

See e.g. the magazine in my avatar...fantastic cars, basically a stripped down 3.2 with sport suspension and blue-printed engine (in Europe: about 241 hp).

Don't know off the top of my head, but it was during the latter parts of 2004 so you should be able to get a back issue.

BTW, it looks like I am selling mine this weekend...back to the former owner (who has had a 964 RS and a 996 in the meantime)! Who knows, maybe I'll come knocking on HIS door in a year or two...

Very overlooked, exceptional example of the 911 line. Very rare, 28 U.S. models, overall 340 in total worldwide. In addition to Morty's assertion of 241 hp, the RoW versions weigh only 2,550 lbs. resulting in a very compelling wt/hp ratio. All of the stats don't even really do the car justice; you really need to drive one. Quite a different experience from the stock Carreras, let alone the heavier, more complicated models that follow in the 911 line.

Funny thing about these cars. When they were sold new, they were not all that popular. In fact, I had pulled out an old magazine article (it was either C & D or R & T) that compared the 911 Club Sport to the Chevrolet Corvette Z51, and they declared the Z51 the winner. There was a great line in there somewhere about having to be a "dyed in the wool Porsche nutball" to spend more money for a car that was essentially a stripper, and that performed only marginally better than their previously-tested normal 911 Carrera.

I don't recall a special motor being part of the US package, though. It was not mentioned in that article. It had no power anything, no back seat, no sunroof, no A/C, no radio, door "pulls" instead of handles inside, stripped door panels, the sports suspension, F & R spoilers, and a "CS" decal on the drivers side front fender.

Actually, I just realized that it must be an RoW model given its '87 model year. And I thought I had the only RoW CS in the U.S.

I think the US cars had a different DME chip that gave it a slightly higher redline and a bit more juice (unless I'm thinking of ROW)...

I think all CS:s had the different chip moving the redline to about 6,800. The big difference with respect to the engine, however, as I understand it, was the blueprinting.

Also, with respect to the "no power anything" and "door pulls" - not quite true - it has power mirrors and the only difference with respect to the doors (compared to "normal" 3.2s) is that the CS doesn't have the top lids.

All in all - a great package, but as mentioned above, at the time it came out, the CS wasn't very well received.
